  • 'Mondial' Facewool Clown 1 x 100g ball (dark grey)
  • 1 pair 4mm knitting needles or size needed for correct tension.
  • Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure

MEASUREMENTS

To fit head (approx): 50-53 cm

TENSION

21 sts and 28 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 4mm needles

INSTRUCTIONS

Tubular Cast On (if desired)

Using a contrast colour, cast on half the number of sts you require, plus one extra st for odd number of sts, and for even number of sts increase or decrease one st when the cast on edge is complete to achieve the correct number of sts. Change to yarn for project, 1st foundation row - K1, * with yarn at front, K1, rep from * to end ... this row increases to the number of sts required. Begin Tubular Stitch - 2nd foundation row - * K1, bring yarn to front, slip next st purlways, bring yarn to back through needles, rep from * to last st, K1. 3rd foundation row - * slip 1 purlways, bring yarn to back, K1, bring yarn to front, rep from * to last st, slip last st. Work 2nd and 3rd foundation rows as many times stated. Carefully unpick the contrast yarn from the cast on edge.

CAP

Using 4mm needles, cast on 79 sts using Tubular Cast On, then work 4 rows in Tubular Stitch OR cast on in usual manner.

Beg Rib -

1st row (RS) - K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.

2nd row - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end. Rep 1st and 2nd rows 3 times more ... 8 rows rib in all. Work in stocking st until work measures 9cm from beg, ending with a purl row.

Shape Crown -

1st row - K1, * K9, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 72 sts. Work 7 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

9th row - K1, * K8, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 65 sts. Work 7 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

17th row - K1, * K7, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 58 sts. Work 7 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

25th row - K1, * K6, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 51 sts. Work 7 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

33rd row - K1, * K5, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 44 sts. Work 7 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

41st row - K1, * K4, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 37 sts. Work 7 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

49th row - K1, * K3, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 30 sts. Work 7 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

57th row - K1, * K2, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 23 sts. Work 7 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

65th row - K1, * K1, K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 16 sts. Work 7 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

73rd row - K1, * K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ... 9 sts. Break off yarn leaving a long end. Run end through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS. Using mattress st, join side edges together to form centre back seam. Make a pom pom approx 6cm in diameter and sew to tip of cap. Sew trimming to front of Cap as pictured.
