There are many popular crafts nowadays you can try, so anyone needing a new hobby will certainly find many options. Below, we have listed some of the other crafts you may not even have considered yet. So, if you are looking for something new to do, be sure to check out our suggestions below.

What Is Felting?

One of the crafts you could pick up as a new hobby is felting. There are different types of felting nowadays, but the type of felting we are talking about is needle felting. Needle felting is a craft where you use special needles to interlock wool fibres - this with the aim to create a condensed material.

To start felting, you will need some wool and various sizes of felting needles - this ensures you have the right tools for the job. There are many different felting needles available nowadays, but you want to look out for the most popular options - this includes number 36, 38, and 40 triangle point needles.

What Is Clay Modelling?

Most people have not heard of clay modelling, but it is just a fancy term for clay sculpting. You may remember clay sculpting from your childhood, because this type of craft is often done during childhood, albeit with child's clay.

As an adult, there are more options available to you where clay modelling is concerned. When you execute clay modelling, you can create a three-dimensional piece of artwork. Crafters can use three different types of clay to do this - this includes plastilina (oil-based clay), self-hardening clay (non-firing clay), and ceramic pottery clay. Depending on the tools you have available, you must choose a type of clay that matches what you have available for your craft. So, if you have a pottery oven, you can go all out with some genuine ceramic pottery clay.

What Is Candle Making?

Another craft you may not have considered yet is candle making, although this type of craft is becoming increasingly more popular. With candle making, crafters can create some of the most intricate candles - this includes scented candles, oddly shaped candles, and many others.

Before you start with candle making, you will need some essential supplies to get started. Firstly, you will need some wax - this wax can be obtained in the form of container wax or pillar wax. Container wax is obtained for candles that will be stored in a tin or a jar, while pillar wax is used for candles that can stand on their own.

The second thing you will need is some fragrance oil, this is an essential when you want to create some scented candles for your home. To ensure you get the best result from your scented candle, it is advised to choose 30 grams of fragrance oil for each ½ - kilogram of wax. Of course, you could use different concentrations depending on your needs. However, please note that there is a guideline where the maximum amount of fragrance oil is concerned. Please ensure to stick to these guidelines.

In addition to wax and fragrance oil, you will need a colour agent for your candles too. To colour your candles, you can choose dye chips, blocks, and liquid dye. These are all viable options to create your own candles.

Of course, to make candles, you will require the proper wicks too. The quality of the wicks you choose is extremely important, since the candle must burn properly. The size of the wick also plays a role on how well your candle burns, since it must match the type of wax and the overall size of the candle.

Candle makers also need several types of containers and moulds, depending on the type of candle they intend on making. The easiest candles to make are usually the ones in containers, since you do not have to worry too much about the look of your candle then.

Finally, you will need some additional supplies to bring your candle making projects to a successful conclusion. In addition to the candle making supplies we already mentioned, be sure to consider additional supplies such as a scale, heat source, pouring pitcher, thermometer, warning labels, paper towels, and other useful things that could make your candles the best!
