Shower curtains that make a splash

The wide range of patterns, colours and designs available in shower curtains goes to show the impact that such a simple item can have on your bathroom design - consider it the central focus of your bathroom and use it to inform the rest of the room's décor. But there are also a number of practical considerations to bear in mind when choosing a new shower curtain.

Cotton shower curtains
Cotton is chosen for its light and breezy effect in the bathroom. Given cotton is prone to absorbing moisture, most cotton curtains are paired with a vinyl or polyester backing.

Hookless shower curtains
Perfect for contemporary-style bathrooms, hookless shower curtains are threaded through the shower rail, rather than attached via hooks, which gives them a sleek, seamless look.

Vinyl shower curtains
The lowest maintenance of all shower curtains, synthetic vinyl curtains repel moisture and don't require an additional liner or backing. Given its functionality, you'll find the widest selection of designs in vinyl.

Micro-fibre shower curtains
While lighter and softer to touch than plastic shower curtains, micro-fibre shower curtains still perform well against water-absorption, and mould and mildew resistance. They often come with magnetic weights to help maintain an elegant drape.

Pocketed shower curtains
This type of shower curtain features a series of pockets in the design, giving you compartments to store bath accessories, brushes and even shampoo bottles. Most pocketed shower curtains are made from vinyl, which means they're easy to clean and maintain.

Cleaning your shower curtain

Even though shower curtains are relatively inexpensive, cleaning your shower curtain regularly will not only keep your shower sparkling and hygienic but also extend its lifespan.

Most shower curtains can be removed from their rail and wiped down with a damp cloth or sponge or, if extra dirty, placed in the washing machine. However, certain materials need to be handled carefully. For example, plastic shower curtains can melt under extremely hot temperatures, so always wash these types of shower curtains in a low-temperature wash (maximum 40 degrees Celsius). When unsure, check the manufacturer's label.

Lack of friction with shower curtain materials may also hinder the wash process, given that plastic or treated fabric can be quite slippery. Add two towels to the washing machine to get the necessary friction for a decent, thorough wash.
