INSTRUCTIONS

MITTENS (make 2)

Using 4.00mm needles, cast on 21 sts.
Beg Rib - 1st row (RS) - K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.
2nd row - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows twice more, inc one st in centre of last row ... 22 sts, 6 rows rib in total. Work 2 rows stocking st.
Shape for Thumb 1st row (RS) - K10, inc once in each of next 2 sts, K10 ... 24 sts.
2nd and foll alt rows - Purl.
3rd row - K10, inc in next st, K2, inc in next st, K10 ... 26 sts.
5th row - K10, inc in next st, K4, inc in next st, K10 ... 28 sts.
6th row - Purl.
Divide for Thumb - Next row (RS) - K10, cast on 2 sts, place next 8 sts onto a stitch holder and leave at front of work, K10. Cont on these 22 sts and work 9 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
Shape Top - Next row (RS) - * K2tog, rep from * to end ...11 sts.
Next row - * P2tog, rep from * to last st, P1 ... 6 sts. Break off yarn leaving a long end. Run end through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.
Thumb - Slip 8 sts from stitch holder onto 4.00mm needle so that RS is facing.
Next row - Inc in first st, K6, inc in last st ... 10 sts.
Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
Next row * K2tog, rep from * to end ... 5 sts. Break off yarn leaving a long end. Run end through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

TO MAKE UP

DO NOT PRESS. Using mattress st seam, join side edges together and thumb seam, sewing base of thumb to hand. Using a crochet hook, attach yarn to top of mitten on thumb side. Make 16 chain (or length desired). Fasten off. Make another length of chain in same manner to other mitten. Knot lengths of chain together at top.
