Why should I sew workwear?
Some types of work, including medical jobs, catering, car mechanics, and cleaners require uniforms that are easy to wear, easy to clean and are suitable for the job. Often, companies provide workwear only in standard sizes, which can be difficult if you are shorter, taller or a different size than the standard patterns. Sometimes, companies limit the number of uniforms they provide, and you may want to add an extra pair of pants or a top. All these things are easy to do when sewing your own workwear garments.
What should I consider when sewing workwear patterns?
Here are some of the main points to take into consideration:
- Make sure you use fabric that can easily be washed, and ideally does not require much ironing.
- If you use fabric such as cotton, which may shrink, make sure you wash the fabric before starting your sewing project - that way you won't be disappointed by a garment that shrinks after you have made it.
- Allow sufficient space for movement. Many workwear garments have extra room for free arm movement, or can be worn over a T-shirt, so if in doubt make the next size up.
- Check if your pattern includes accessories. Some workwear patterns include instructions on how to make caps or ponytail holders.
What are unisex patterns?
Unisex patterns are suitable for both men and women. Most patterns have variations, so you can choose a particular style of fastening (i.e. zip or ties) or opt for long sleeves or short sleeves. You simply pick the size you need and sew the pattern. Many workwear patterns will use elastic or Velcro fastenings for ease of putting on/taking off.
