How To Dip Dye Curtains: Dip Dyed Henry Curtains
Dip-dye is a popular art movement involving dyeing sections of a fabric to create a dual toned look. These are often done with two contrasting colours to create a distinct difference between the colour tones.
Bring a maximalist look into your home by dip dyeing your curtains! Whether you're breathing new life into your current tab top curtains or wanting to completely refresh your space, our Dip Dyed Curtains Project is easy for beginner crafters looking to upgrade their windows.
What You'll Need
Before you start, make sure you have everything you need:
- A pair of tab top curtains
- Navy fabric dye
- Quick unpick, matching thread and sewing machine (optional)
- Large bucket or stainless-steel sink
- Washing machine
- Water
- Clothes drying rack
- Pins
- Rubber Gloves
Dyeing Your DIY Curtains
When creating dip dyed curtains it's important to first prep your curtains by opening up the hems with a seam ripper. Often the threads within the seam won't dye, so it's best to re-hem your curtains after dyeing with a thread that matches.
While the curtains are damp, pin two together and mark where you want the dye to go up to. This ensures for a symmetrical design. Mix the dye in a large bucket - follow any provided instructions on the packaging.
Dunk the bottoms of the pinned curtains in the dye up to the marks you made. To create an ombre look continue moving the curtains up every 15 minutes. If you're wanting that classic dip dyed look, leave your curtains dipped at the mark for 60 minutes. After this time, rinse your curtains in cold water then hang to dry. Keep the un-dyed sections away from the dyed sections as the colour may transfer.
Once dry, re-hem the bottoms of your curtains with your matching thread and install on your curtain rod!

DIY Ombre Curtains With Ready-Made Sheers
There are many ways to incorporate an artistic charm into your home styling. Creating DIY ombre curtains is the perfect way to elevate your home with decorative touch. Ombre involves an impressive display of colour gradients, with the shades gradually transitioning from lighter to darker.
The shading of colours adds depth and length to your windows, creating the illusion of elongated window furnishings. Dye your curtains in colours that coordinate with your current home styling colour palette or, instead create DIY ombre curtains in bright vibrant colours for a maximalist and eye-catching decorative piece. Perfect for beginner crafters looking to upgrade their windows, our Ombre Curtains Project is a great introduction to home furnishings DIY creations.
What You'll Need
Before you start, make sure you have everything you need:
- Jacquard iDye Fabric Dye Ipoly Blue
- Stovetop
- Large stainless-steel pot
- Sheer curtain fabric
- Hanging rack
Creating the Ombre Look
Once you've got all your supplies together you can then start to create your DIY ombre curtains. To start, place a stainless-steel pot on your stovetop and fill it with enough water for the fabric to be freely moved. Turn the heat on high and add your dye to the water. Make sure to stir until it's dissolved.
Place the bottom half of your sheer curtain fabrics into the pot and hang the remainder of the sheers above the stove. After 15 minutes lift the sheers out of the water slightly to create the next level of deeper colour. Leave this again for 15 minutes.
When the 15 minutes is up, lift the sheers out of the water, leaving the last section of the sheers in the pot. This will create the darkest shade of the ombre. After another 15 minutes, remove the sheers carefully from the water and hang over a clothesline outside to dry.
After your creation has dried, wash the garment with a mild detergent and allow to dry before hanging.
