WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Fabrics are from 'Purpetual Beauty' range
    • 80cm Fabric A - Paisley Floral, Multi
    • 80cm Fabric B - Large Floral, Multi
    • 40cm Fabric C - Packed Floral, Multi
    • 40cm Fabric D - Paisley, Multi
    • 40cm Fabric E - Swirls, Multi
    • 80cm Fabric F - Blender, Purple (includes binding)
    • 70cm Fabric G - Butterfly, Multi for sashing
    • 5m Fabric H - Border, Multi
  • 2m Fabric of choice for backing
  • 6m x 250cm Cotton/bamboo batting
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Quilting pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Hand needle
  • Sewing machine with 1/4" foot & walking foot

 

All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed.

1/4" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.

INSTRUCTIONS

CUTTING

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

From each Fabrics A & B fussy cut 10 x 6¾" squares for a total of 20 x 6¾" squares. These squares will be the centre of each block.

From each of Fabrics C, D, E & F cut 2 x 5⅜" strips, crosscut strips into 10 x 5⅜" squares for a total of 40 squares, 10 squares in each fabric. Cut each square once on the diagonal to make 80 half-square triangles, 20 half-square triangles in each fabric.

From Fabric G cut 13 x 2" strips for sashing; crosscut 8 strips into 9½" lengths.

From Fabric H, border print cut 4 strips x 5½" wide lengthways down the wide floral stripe; cut one 2" wide x 30" long strip lengthways down the paisley stripe, crosscut into 12 x 2" squares for sashing corners.

From Fabric F cut 7 x 2½" strips for binding.

BLOCKS - make 20

Note - For each block you will need 1 x 6¾"square (Fabric A or B) and 4 x matching half-square triangles (Fabric C, D, E or F). Lay out the squares with 4 matching half-square triangles to make 20 blocks.

Step 1 - To make the first block, take one set - 1 x 6¾" square and 4 matching half-square triangles. Sew one half-square triangle to opposite sides of the square. Press seams towards triangles and cut off 'dog ears'.

Step 2 - Sew the remaining two half-square triangles to the other two sides of the square. Press seams towards triangles and cut off 'dog ears'.

Step 3 - Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to make a total of 20 blocks.

QUILT TOP

Step 4 - Lay out the blocks in 5 rows with 4 blocks in each row.

Step 5 - Sew a 2" x 9½" Fabric G sashing strip to the right-hand side of Blocks 1, 2 and 3 in Row 1. Press seams towards the sashing. Sew left-hand side of Block 2 to sashing on Block 1, left-hand side of Block 3 to sashing on Block 2 and left-hand side of Block 4 to sashing on Block 3. Press seams towards sashing.

Step 6 - Repeat Step 5 for Rows 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Step 7 - For the sashing between the rows sew 3 x 2" Fabric H squares between four 2" x 9½" Fabric G strips. Make 4 Fabric G-H strips.

Step 8 - Sew one sashing strip to the bottom edge of Rows 1, 2, 3 and 4. Press seams towards sashing. Sew the top of Row 2 to sashing on Row 1, sew the top of Row 3 to sashing on Row 2, sew the top of Row 4 to sashing on Row 3, and sew the top of Row 5 to sashing on Row 4. Press seams towards sashing.

Step 9 - Inner borders - Sew the remaining a 2" Fabric G strips together end to end to make one long inner border strip. Measure to check length of sides, top and bottom edges before cutting borders to size. Cut into 2 x 51½" strips for side borders and 2 x 42" strips for top and bottom borders.

Step 10 - Sew one 51½" border strip to each side of the quilt top and press seams towards border. Sew one 42" border strip to top and bottom edges of quilt top and press seams towards border.

Step 11 - Outer borders - Sew 1 x 5½" wide Fabric H floral strip to each side of the quilt top, press seams towards border and trim off excess fabric.

Step 12 - Sew remaining 5½" wide Fabric H floral strips to top and bottom edges, press seams towards border and trim off excess fabric.

Step 13 - Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 14 - Join the 5 x 2½" binding strips together on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
