Cutting
For the 4x4 layout (16 stars total)
For each star (making 16 blocks total):
- Flying Geese Units:
- Cut 8 monotones squares, each 3.5 inches x 3.5 inches.
- Cut 4 white rectangles, each 3.5 inches x 6.5 inches.
- Star Centre:
- Cut 1 monotones square, 6.5 inches x 6.5 inches (for the center of the star).
- White 3.5-inch Squares:
- Cut 4 white squares, each 3.5 inches x 3.5 inches (to complete the star points).
Assembly
Step 1: Making the Flying Geese
- Start by making flying geese units. Each flying geese unit requires one white rectangle and two monotones squares.
Flying Geese Unit Construction:
- Take one 3.5-inch x 6.5-inch white rectangle and place one 3.5-inch monotones square on one of the short edges, right sides together.
- Sew along the diagonal from corner to corner. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4 inch and press.
- Place the second 3.5-inch monotones square on the opposite short edge of the white rectangle, right sides together. Repeat the same process: sew along the diagonal, trim, and press.
- You will have 4 flying geese units per star
Step 2: Assembling the Star Block
To construct the star block, create it in three rows as follows:
- Row 1: Start by attaching a white 3.5-inch square to the short edge of one flying geese unit. Repeat this step for the other side of the flying geese unit, so that both sides of the flying geese unit are bordered with white squares.
- Row 2: Attach two flying geese units to the monotones centre square. One flying geese unit should be sewn to the left side of the centre square, and the other to the right side. The tips of the flying geese should point toward the outer corners of the block.
- Row 3: Repeat the process from Row 1: Attach the last two white 3.5-inch squares to the short edges of the final flying geese unit. Then, sew this flying geese unit to the bottom of the centre square, completing the last row of the star.
Step 3: Repeat for All 16 Blocks
Complete all 16 stars in the same manner, following the instructions above.
Step 4: Assembling the Quilt
- Lay out your 4x4 grid of star blocks. Once you're happy with the arrangement, sew the blocks together in rows.
- Once the rows are sewn together, sew the rows together to form the quilt top.
Step 5: Quilting
- Layer your quilt with batting and backing fabric. Pin or baste the quilt layers together.
- Quilt as desired, either by hand or machine. You could quilt in the ditch along the seams or create custom quilting in the open spaces.
Step 6: Binding
- Cut 2.5" strips of fabric (either monotones or white, depending on your design preference) to create the quilt binding.
- Join the strips and attach the binding to the quilt edges, finishing it by hand or machine.
