    • 90cm fabric A - animal blocks (4 full rows)
    • 90cm fabric B - mixed animals, ivory
    • 60cm fabric C - eucalyptus, black
    • 70cm fabric D - kangaroos, green
    • 50cm fabric E - mini koalas, black
    • 70cm fabric F - koalas in trees, grey
    • 50cm fabric G - kookaburras, green
  • 1.8m Fabric H - Prima Homespun, Black (includes binding)
  • 1.7m x 250cm wide Prima Homespun backing fabric
  • 1.7m Legacy cotton/bamboo batting
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread

Finished Size: 61” x 77” (155cm x 196cm)

Optional - 8½" square ruler & rotating cutting mat to make cutting the 7½" squares from Animals Blocks easier. All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed. ¼" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.

INSTRUCTIONS

Cutting

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

  • From Fabric A fussy cut blocks into 17 x 7½" squares.
  • From Fabric B cut 1 x 15½" strip, crosscut into 2 x 15½" squares, one 7½" wide x 15½" rectangle; cut 1 x 7½" strip, crosscut into one 23½" wide x 7½" rectangle.
  • From Fabric C cut 1 x 15½" strip, crosscut into 2 x 15½" squares; cut 1 x 7½" strip, crosscut into one 15½" wide x 7½" rectangle.
  • From Fabric D cut 1 x 23½" strip, crosscut into 1 x 15½" square, one 7½" wide x 23½" rectangle.
  • From Fabric E cut 1 x 15½" strip, crosscut into one 7½" wide x 15½" rectangle and one 15½" wide x 7½" rectangle.
  • From Fabric F cut 1 x 23½" strip, crosscut into one 7½" wide x 23½" rectangle, one 7½" wide x 15½" rectangle and one 15½" wide x 7½" rectangle.
  • From Fabric G cut 1 x 15½" strip, crosscut into one 7½" wide x 15½" rectangle and one 23½" wide x 7½" rectangle.
  • From Fabric H cut 7 x 3" strips for outer border; 7 x 2½" strips for binding; 16 x 1½" strips for sashing, set aside 2 strips, crosscut remaining strips into 11 x 7½" strips, 9 x 15½" strips, 7 x 23½" strips, 3 x 31½" strips.

Step 1 - Refer to diagram and photo to layout the blocks.

Step 2 - The quilt top is worked in two strips four sections in the first strip, three sections in the second strip as shown in diagram with bold lines separating the sections.

Step 3 - Section one. Referring to diagram sew a 7½" sashing strip to bottom edge of one then sew two to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 15½" sashing strip to the right-hand side of unit 1-2 then sew 3 to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 7½" sashing strip to the right-hand end of four then sew five to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 23½" sashing strip to the bottom edge of unit 1-2-3 then sew unit 4-5 to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 23½" sashing strip to right-hand side of 6 then sew unit 1-2-3-4-5 other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. This completes section one.

Step 4 - Section two. Referring to diagram sew a 7½" sashing strip to bottom edge of 1 then sew 2 to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 15½" sashing strip to right-hand side of unit 1-2 then sew three to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 15½" sashing strip to the right-hand side of four then sew unit 1-2-3 to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. This completes section two.

Step 5 - Section three. Referring to diagram sew a 7½" sashing strip to bottom edge of one then sew two to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 15½" sashing strip to the right-hand side of three then sew unit 1-2 to other side of the strip. Press sashing towards strip. Sew a 23½" sashing strip to the bottom edge of 1-2-3 unit then sew four to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 7½" sashing strip to bottom edge of five then sew six to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 23½" sashing strip to right-hand edge of 5-6 then sew unit 1-2-3-4 to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. This completes section three.

Step 6 - Section four. Referring to diagram sew a 7½" sashing strip to right-hand edge of one then sew two to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 7½" sashing strip to right-hand edge of two then sew three to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. This completes section four.

Step 7 - To join sections for strip one Sew a 31½" sashing strip to bottom edge of Sections 1, 2 and 3. Press seams towards strips. Sew top edge of section two to sashing on bottom of Section one, top edge of section three to sashing on bottom of section two, top edge of Section four to sashing on bottom of section three. Press seams towards strip. This completes strip one.

Step 8 - Section five. Referring to diagram sew a 7½" sashing strip to right-hand edge of one then sew two to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 15½" sashing strip to top edge of unit 1-2 then sew three to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 15½" sashing strip to top edge of three then sew four to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 7½" sashing strip to bottom edge of five then sew six to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 31½" sashing strip to right-hand edge of unit 5-6 then sew unit 1-2-3-4 to other side of strip. Press seams towards strip. This completes section five.

Step 9 - Section six. Referring to diagram sew a 15½" sashing strip to right-hand edge of one then sew two to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. This completes section six.

Step 10 - Section seven. Referring to diagram sew a 7½" sashing strip to bottom edge of one then sew two to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 7½" sashing strip to bottom edge of three then sew four to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 23½" sashing strip to right-hand edge of unit 1-2 then sew five other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 23½" sashing strip to right-hand edge of five then sew unit 3-4 to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. Sew a 31½" sashing strip to bottom edge of unit 1-2-3-4-5 then sew 6 to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip. This completes section seven.

Step 11 - To join sections for strip two, sew a 31½" sashing strip to bottom edge of sections and six. Press seams towards strips. Sew top edge of section six to sashing on bottom of section five, top edge of section seven to sashing on bottom of section six. Press seams towards strip. This completes strip two.

Step 12 - To join Strip one to Strip two, sew together the 2 x 1½" sashing strips that were set aside into one long strip. Sew to the right-hand edge of Strip 1. Press seams towards strip and trim off excess fabric. Sew strip two to other side of sashing and press seam towards strip.

Step 13 - Outer Border. Sew the 7 x 3" Fabric H border strips together end to end pressing seams open. Measure side edges of the quilt top (71½") and cut two strips to required length. Sew one border strip to each side of the quilt and press seams towards border. Cut remainder of border strip in half sewing to the top and bottom of the quilt, press and trim off any excess fabric.

Step 14 - Quilting. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 15 - To finish, Join the 7 x 2½" binding strips together on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
