MAKEUP HEADBAND FOR MUM

Makeup Headband for Mum Project

Level: Easy

What you'll need:

  • 1m Cotton Jersey fabric
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Measuring tape
  • 20cm braided elastic

Instructions

Main body for the Headband:

To ensure that your headband fits perfectly, measure the circumference of the wearer's head and subtract 20 cm, this will be the length of fabric required for the main body of the headband. {i.e. Head measurement of 58 cm will require a rectangle 38 cm long. 58 cm (head diameter) - 20 cm (back strap length) = 38 cm}

In this example the main body is made from a rectangle that measures 38cm x 18 cm.

Step 1 - Cut a rectangle that suits your measurements. Fold it in half with right sides facing and sew down the open side.

Step 2 - Turn the body inside out so the front of the fabric is on the outside.

Step 3 - Create the elastic back strap for the headband.

Tip: If using a non-stretch fabric at this stage you may want to iron the piece flat with an open seam.

Elastic back strap for the Headband:

Step 1 - Cut a rectangle that measures 40 cm x 7.5 cm

Step 2 - Fold the rectangle in half with right sides facing. Sew down the open side.

Step 3 - Turn rectangle inside out right side facing.

Step 4 - Using a safety pin attached to one end of the elastic, feed it through the fabric tube. Pin the loose end to one end of the tube and gather the fabric. Pin the loose end to the open end of tube.

Step 5 - Using the sewing machine sew both ends of the strap encasing the elastic in the gathered fabric.

Constructing the Headband:

Step 1 - Lay the main body of the headband with the joining seam facing down.

Step 2- Pair one end of your elastic with one side of the main body of the headband. Align the elastic with the center of the edge. Fold over the top of the body to cover the elastic and then bring the bottom up. The elastic should be wrapped with both ends of the side edge. Pin to secure.

Step 3- Repeat step 2 with the other side.

Step 4- Using a sewing machine create a seam over the edges. Ensure that you back stitch to secure the elastic to the main body.

Step 5- Fold out seams and hide the elastic ends in the folds.
