MASQUERADE MASKS

Masquerade Masks Project

LEVEL: ADVANCED

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

INSTRUCTIONS

Cut out all your paper components

Step 1 - Decide what animal you would like to create - choose one of the designs on the template provided or use your imagination to create your own.

Step 2 - Using the Fiskars punch cutter, cut out multiple shapes in glitter and/or metallic card to layer.

Step 3 - Adhere layers together with a small square of double-sided tape or dot of hot glue.

Cut out and prep make base using the provided template

Step 1 - Using the mask template, trace it twice onto thick felt sheet and cut out using scissors (including eye holes).

Step 2 - Using the spray adhesive, sandwich together to create a thick and sturdy mask.

Step 3 - Using the fabric of your choice and spray adhesive, glue the fabric to the mask then trace a 2cm border around the mask on the fabric.

Step 4 - Cut notches in the 2cm allowance. Using hot glue adhere fabric allowance to the backside of the mask.

Step 5 - Cut an X in the eye holes from the front, fold inwards and adhere with hot glue.

Fringe, Fringe, Fringe!

Step 1 - Cut the tassel/tinsel fringing of your choice to length. You may want to layer for extra fullness.

Step 2 - Attach with hot glue to the edges of your mask. If you want to attach all the way across the top like on the lion mask, use the forehead template for extra height to avoid it falling down onto your face.

Step 3 - Layer additional fringe details or trims of your choice (eg: gold bullion fringe for the lion or pastel fringe braid for the unicorn).

Additional elements for your animal

Step 1 - If you have chosen the unicorn or dragon, using the template, trace the horns and ears onto the thick felt and cut out. Like the mask, double up and glue together for strength.

Step 2 - Cover horns or ears with fabric using spray adhesive.

Step 3 - Border the horns with gold gimp trim.

Step 3 - Attach horns and ears to your mask with hot glue.

Adding your punched paper details

Step 1 - Layer your glitter/metallic paper detail on you mask according to image (e.g., circles for the lion, flowers for the unicorn or scales for the dragon). You can make it symmetrical or place them more randomly.

Step 2 - When you are happy with your layout, hot glue all your pieces making sure to disguise the edge of the fringe.

Tip - Take a photo before you glue down all your pieces, so you know where to add the glue.

Finishing touches

Step 1 - Using the gimp trim, cover the edges of the eyes of your mask and any other remaining exposed edges.

Step 2 - To finish off the mask, cut ribbon long enough to reach around to the back of your head so you can tie in place and wear your mask comfortably. Hot glue the ribbon to the sides of the back of the mask to secure in place.

Step 3 - Using the mask template trace and cut out the nude felt and glue to the back of the mask.

Step 4 - Add any extra details you like. For example, iridescent pipe cleaners and butterflies to add a fun element to the unicorn, and gold bullion tassels for the lion's ears.

Tip - Add crystals, sequins, or any other fabulous elements you like. You can customize your mask, so it is one of kind. Use your imagination and have fun!
