Tension

15.5 sts and 14 rows to 10cm over patt using 5.5mm hook.

Note - Cowl is worked on a larger hook than usually recommended.

Special stitches

Spike st - insert hook into specified st/sp, yarn over hook, draw through loop and bring up to height of current round, yarn over hook and draw through both loops on hook.

Cowl

Using a 5.5mm hook, make 256 ch, sl st into ch at beg, being careful not to twist ch.

1st round - 1ch (does not count as a st here and throughout), 1dc in same st, 1ch, miss next ch, * 1dc in each of next 3ch, 1ch, miss next ch, rep from * to last 2ch, 1dc in each of last 2ch, sl st into dc at beg.

Beg patt -

2nd round - 2ch (does not count as a st here and throughout), 1tr in same st, 1ch, miss next 1ch sp, * 1tr in each of next 3 sts, 1ch, miss next 1ch sp, rep from * to last 2 sts, 1tr in each of last 2 sts, sl st into tr at beg.

3rd round - 1ch, 1dc in same st, spike st into next 1ch sp 2 rounds down, * 1dc in next st, 1ch, miss next st, 1dc in next st, spike st into next 1ch sp 2 rounds down, rep from * to last 2 sts, 1dc in next st, 1ch, miss last st, sl st into dc at beg.

4th round - 2ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, 1ch, miss next 1ch sp, * 1tr in each of next 3 sts, 1ch, miss next 1ch sp, rep from * around, sl st into tr at beg.

5th round - 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1ch, miss next st, * 1dc in next st, spike st into next 1ch sp 2 rounds down, 1dc in next st, 1ch, miss next st, rep from * to last 2 sts, 1dc in next st, spike st into next 1ch sp 2 rounds down, sl st into dc at beg.

Rounds 2-5 inclusive form patt.

Work 12 more rounds in patt, then 2nd round once more.

19th round - 1ch, 1dc in same st, spike st in next 1ch sp 2 rounds down, * 1dc in each of next 3 sts, spike st in next 1ch sp 2 rounds down, rep from * to last 2 sts, 1dc in each of last 2 sts, sl st into dc at beg.

Fasten off.
