FLINDERS COTTON CROCHET OWL

Instructions

Note: Owl is made from the base up. Feathers are crocheted around the base dc/htr fabric as you work up the Body. Eyes, Beak, Ear Tufts and Wings are crocheted separately and sewn on.

Special Abbreviations

• Dc2tog = double crochet 2 stitches together - insert hook in front loop only of next 2 stitches, yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops, yarn over hook and pull through remaining 2 loops.
• Fpdc = front post double crochet - work the dc around the post of the specified stitch.

Base

Using 4mm hook and C1, make a magic ring,

1st Rnd - 1ch (does not count as a st throughout), 6dc in ring, sl st into dc at beg ... 6 sts.

2nd Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same and each st around, sl st into dc at beg ... 12 sts.

3rd Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, rep from around, sl st into dc at beg ... 18 sts.

4th Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 2sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2sts, rep from around, sl st into dc at beg ... 24 sts.

5th Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 3sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 3sts, rep from around, sl st into dc at beg ... 30 sts.

6th Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 4sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 4sts, rep from around, sl st into dc at beg ... 36 sts.

Cont increasing in this way until 30th Rnd is completed ... 180 sts.

Body

Change to C2 and work 8 rnds dc.

39th Rnd - 1ch, 1htr in same and each st around, sl st into htr at beg. Remove hook and hold loop with stitch marker.

First Feather Round -

Turn work upside down, so base is pointing upwards. Join C3 to the post of any htr.

1st Rnd - 1ch, 1fpdc around same st, 1fpdc around next 2 sts, 5ch, miss 2ch, 1dc in back loop of each of next 3ch, 1fpdc around each of next 6 sts of Body, 5ch, miss 2ch, 1dc in back loop of each of next 3ch, rep from to last 3 sts of Body, 1fpdc in each of last 3 sts, sl st into fpdc at beg ... 30 feather spines.

2nd Rnd - Miss next 2 sts, 1tr in each of next 3 sts of feather spine, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch loop at end of feather spine, 1tr in each of next 3 sts of feather spine, miss 2 sts, sl st into each of next 2 sts, rep from around, omitting last sl st. Fasten off.

Body Rounds Continued -

Turn work the right way up, insert hook back into loop held by stitch marker and work 2 rnds dc and 1 rnd htr. Remove hook and hold loop with stitch marker.

All Other Feather Rounds -

Turn work upside down. Join C1 to any htr that is as directly below the spine of a previous row's feather as possible - this staggers the feathers so they don't all line up in columns. Work all Feather Rounds in same way as First Feather Round.

Cont working 3 Body Rnds, then 2 Feather Rnds, alternating Feather colours as folls - C3, C4, C1, C5, rep. Work 15 Body and Feather Round combinations, thus ending with a C1 Feather Round.

Head

Turn work the right way up and insert hook into loop held by stitch marker.

82nd Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st around, sl st into dc at beg.

83rd Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same st, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 28 sts, rep from around, omitting last dc, sl st into dc at beg ... 174 sts.

84th - 87th Rnd - Rep 82nd Rnd.

88th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 13 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 27 sts, rep from to last 13 sts, 1dc in each of last 13 sts, sl st into dc at beg ... 168 sts.

89th - 92nd Rnd - Rep 82nd Rnd.

93rd Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same st, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 26 sts, rep from around, omitting last dc, sl st into dc at beg ... 162 sts.

94th- 97th Rnd - Rep 82nd Rnd.

98th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 12 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 25 sts, rep from to last 13 sts, 1dc in each of last 12 sts, sl st into dc at beg ... 156 sts.

106th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 11 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 23 sts, rep from to last 13 sts, 1dc in each of last 11 sts, sl st into dc at beg ... 144 sts

107th - 108th Rnd: Rep 82nd Rnd.

109th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same st, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 22 sts, rep from around, omitting last dc, sl st into dc at beg ... 138 sts.

110th Rnd - Rep 82nd Rnd.

111th - 112nd Rnd - Dec in the same way in every rnd ... 66 sts.

Insert fibre fill so that cushion holds its shape but remains cuddly.

123rd - 132nd Rnd - Dec in same way as before, inserting more stuffing as necessary ... 6 sts.

Cut yarn leaving a tail, use yarn needle to sew tail in and out along the top of the 6dc and pulling tight to close hole. Fasten off. Bury end inside cushion.

Eyes (Make 2)

Using 4 mm hook and C3, make a magic ring.

1st Rnd - 2ch (does not count as a st throughout), 12 tr in ring, sl st into tr at beg.

Change to C4.

2nd Rnd - 2ch, 2tr in same and each st around, sl st into tr at beg ... 24 sts.

3rd Rnd - 2ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in next st, (2tr in next st, 1tr in next st) x 8, (2htr in next st, 1htr in next st) x 3, sl st into tr at beg ... 36 sts.

4th Rnd - 2ch, 1tr in same and next st, 2tr in next st, (1tr in each of next 2 sts, 2tr in next st) x 8, (1htr in each of next 2 sts, 2htr in next st) x 3, sl st into tr at beg ... 48 sts.

5th Rnd - 2ch, 1tr in same st, (1tr in next st, 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 2 sts) x 8, (1htr in next st, 2htr in next st, 1htr in each of next 2 sts) x 3, sl st into tr at beg ... 60 sts.

Change to C3.

6th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st around, sl st into dc at beg.

7th Rnd - 1ch, sl st in same and each st around, sl st into sl st a beg.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Beak

Using 4 mm hook and C5, make a magic ring.

1st Rnd - 1ch, 5dc in ring, sl st into dc at beg ... 5 sts.

2nd Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st around, sl st into dc at beg.

3rd Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st, rep from once, sl st into dc at beg ... 8 sts.

4th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st around, sl st into dc at beg.

5th Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, rep from to last st, sl st into dc at beg ... 12 sts.

6th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st around, sl st into dc at beg.

7th Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, rep from around, sl st into dc at beg ... 16 sts.

8th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st around, sl st into dc at beg.

9th Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, rep from around, sl st into dc at beg ... 20 sts.

Ear Tufts (Make two)

Using 4 mm hook and C5, make 5ch.

1st Rnd - Miss 1ch, 1dc in each ch to end, rotate to work on other side of ch, 1dc in back loop of each of next 4ch ch, sl st into dc at beg ... 8 sts.

2nd Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, 2dc in each next 2 sts, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, 2dc in last st, sl st into dc at beg ... 12 sts.

3rd Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st around, sl st into dc at beg.

4th Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, 2dc in each of next 2 sts, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, 2dc in last st, sl st into dc at beg ... 16 sts.

5th Rnd - Rep 3rd Rnd.

6th Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 6 sts, 2dc in each of next 2 sts, 1dc in each of next 6 sts, 2dc in last st, sl st into dc at beg ... 20 sts.

3rd Rnd - 1ch, 1htr in same and each st around, sl st into htr at beg.

Finishing

DO NOT PRESS. Sew Eyes to Head as shown, ensuring the parts of the Eyes where htrs were worked are positioned towards each other. Using small amount of white yarn, embroider eye highlights as shown. Flatten Beak, Ear Tufts and Wings so fabric is doubled, and sew on Head and Body as shown. Sew in ends.
