LEVEL: EASY
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- 70cm of 4 black fabrics
- 50cm of 7 white fabrics
- 170cm square of wadding
- 2m backing
- Basting spray
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1. Cut 64 black squares 15x15cm and 92 white squares 15x15cm.
Step 2. With a 1cm allowance, start sewing strips three squares long, you will need:
a. 28 strips (WH, BLK, WH)
b. 12 strips (BLK, BLK, BLK) use three of the same black squares
c. 12 strips (WH, WH, WH) use a random mix of white squares
Step 3. Once you have 52 strips start laying out your patchwork design. Create crosses with (WH, BLK, WH) strips either side of an all-black strip of the same design. Sew your strips into pairs (creating a 2x3 square patch) and then sew your patches into pairs creating 12 large rectangles with 4 individual strips left at either the top or bottom.
Step 4. Complete your patchwork by connecting the remaining strips and blocks together until your finished patchwork is 12x13 squares, press.
Step 5. Next baste your wadding to the centre of your backing, trim your backing overhang to approx. 6cm on each side. Now lay your patchwork onto your wadding and baste into place before you sew all three layers together.
Step 6. To finish, fold your backing overhang in half and then fold over onto your patchwork top for a neat finished edge. Sew your border down, folding in corners for a neat finish.
