INSTRUCTIONS

Cutting

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

All pieces are cut the same size (please ensure that you have removed 6 strips and set aside for binding - these are to remain intact).

From each strip cut 3 pieces at 12.5" long so that each piece measures 2.5" x 12.5" (each strip of fabric will yield 3 pieces).

Blocks

Note: Each block is made up of 6 of the cut fabric pieces sewn together in rows to produce a 12.5" x 12.5" block. 25 blocks in total are required to make up the quilt.

Step 1 - Divide fabric into two equal piles, one light, and one dark. While placement is random, placing the dark and light fabrics next to each other will give some contrast to the finished quilt.

Step 2 - Distribute the fabrics into 25 groups each containing 6 pieces of fabric made up of 3 of the dark fabrics and 3 of the light.

Step 3 - Take one group of fabric (ie 6 pieces) from the 25 groups. Of these, divide into 3 groups of two containing one light and one dark fabric. Pairs together so that you have 3 sets of two as shown in the diagram below. Press seams towards dark fabric.

Step 4 - Sew the 3 sets together as shown in the diagram below. Press seams towards dark fabric. You have now completed one quilt block.

Repeat this process with the other 24 fabric groups.

Step 5 - Lay your blocks out in rows of 5 placing the block starting with a light fabric beside one starting with a dark fabric. Once you have placed all blocks, there should be 5 rows x 5 columns of blocks. When you are happy with the layout you can commence sewing the blocks into rows. You will have 5 rows in total. Press seams to one side.

Step 6 - Now that you have the 5 rows of blocks joined, these can be sewn to each other to form the columns. The completed quilt top will be 5 rows high and 5 columns across. Press seams to one side.

Step 7 - Cut backing fabric in half so that you have 2 x 1.8 metre lengths and join together to create one large backing piece.

Step 8 - Lay the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 9 - Join the 6 x 2.5" wide binding strips on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and sew around the quilt, mitring the corners as you sew. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
