What you'll need

Fabrics are from 'WW1 Heroes' range

  • 60cm fabric a - memories, grey
  • 60cm fabric b - high flying, grey
  • 60cm fabric c - light horsemen, tan
  • 40cm fabric d - lest we forget, tan
  • 1m fabric e - mini poppies, white (includes inner border)
  • 8m fabric f - poppies, black (includes outer border & binding)
  • 7m fabric g - naturals 11 motifs, white
  • 9m x 250cm wide backing fabric of choice
  • 9m legacy cotton/bamboo batting
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
  • Rotary cutter
  • Mat
  • Quilters rulers

  • Hand needle
  • Sewing machine with 1/4" foot & walking foot

Optional - 4 1/2" square ruler & rotating cutting mat to make fussy cutting the 2" squares from Fabric D easier.

Instructions

Cutting

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

  • From each of fabrics A, B & C cut 2 x 11" strips; crosscut strips into 5 x 11" squares for each of fabrics A, B and C.
  • From fabric D fussy cut 35 x 2" squares of the badge with the words Lest We Forget.
  • From fabric E cut 4 x 5" strips, crosscut into 30 x 5" squares; 8 x 2½" strips for inner border.
  • From fabric F cut 4 x 5" strips, crosscut into 30 x 5" squares; 8 x 3½" strips for outer border; 8 x 2½" strips for binding.
  • From fabric G cut 32 x 2" strips for sashing, crosscut strips into 49 x 11" strips and 60 x 5" strips.

BLOCKS

Step 1 - Poppies block, 2 x 5" fabric E squares, 2 x 5" fabric F squares, 4 x 5" fabric G sashing strips and 1 x 2" fabric D squares. Referring to diagram sew a 5" sashing strip to the right-hand edge of a 5" fabric E square, then sew a 5" fabric F square to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip.

Step 2 - Referring to diagram sew a 5" sashing strip to the right-hand edge of a 5" fabric F square, then sew a 5" fabric E square to other side of the strip. Press seams towards strip.

Step 3 - Referring to diagram sew a 2" square using fabric D to right-hand end of a 5" sashing strip, then sew another 5" sashing strip to other side of the square. Press seams towards strips.

Step 4 - Referring to diagram sew the top edge of step three to bottom edge of step one, then sew the top edge of step two to the bottom of step three. This completes the poppies block. Repeat steps 1-4 to make 14 more poppies blocks for a total of 15 blocks.

ROWS

Step 5 - Referring to diagram and photo layout the blocks in rows as follows:

Row 1 - fabric A, poppies, fabric B, poppies, fabric C

Row 2 - poppies, fabric A, poppies, fabric B, poppies

Row 3 - fabric C, poppies, fabric A, poppies, fabric B,

Row 4 - poppies, fabric C, poppies, fabric A, poppies

Row 5 - fabric B, poppies, fabric C, poppies, fabric A,

Row 6 - poppies, fabric B, poppies, fabric C, poppies

Step 6 - Using 4 x 11" Fabric G sashing strips sew together blocks in Row 1 pressing seams towards sashing. Repeat for Rows 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Quilt tops

Step 7 - Referring to diagram for sashing between rows sew together 5 x 11" fabric G sashing strips with a 2" fabric D square between each. Press seams towards strips. Make five in total.

Step 8 - Sew one step seven strip to the bottom edge of Rows 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 matching seams. Press seams towards strip. Sew top of Row 2 to strip on bottom of Row 1, top of Row 3 to strip on bottom of Row 2, top of Row 4 to strip on bottom of Row 3, top of Row 5 to strip on bottom of Row 4, top of Row 6 to strip on bottom of Row 5. Press seams well.

Borders

Step 9 - To make the inner border, sew 2 x 2½" Fabric E border strips together end to end pressing seams open. Repeat for remaining 6 x 2½" Fabric E border strips. Sew one long border strip to each side of the quilt and press seams towards border, trim off any excess fabric. Sew each of remaining long border strips to the top and bottom of the quilt, press seams toward border and trim off any excess fabric.

Step 10 - To make the outer border, sew the 2 x 3½" fabric F border strips together end to end pressing seams open. Repeat for remaining 6 x 3½" fabric E border strips. Sew one long strip to each side of the quilt and press seams towards border, trim off any excess fabric. Sew each of remaining long border strips to the top and bottom of the quilt, press seams toward border and trim off any excess fabric.

Step 11 - begin quilting the layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 12 - To finish, join the 8x 2½" binding strips together on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.

Step 13 - For the outer border sew one 3½" fabric B border strip to each side of the quilt. Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric. Sew remaining strips to the top and bottom of the quilt, press and trim off any excess fabric.

Step 14 - Fuse batting between quilt top and backing or layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 15 - Join the 6 x 2½" binding strips on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
