PATCHWORK CHRISTMAS STOCKING

INSTRUCTIONS

STOCKING 1

1.2m Fabric A - Snowflake, Natural/Red (includes lining)

40cm Fabric B - Starburst, Red/Natural (includes binding)

20cm Fabric C - Holly, Natural

20cm Fabric D - Merry Christmas, Natural/Green/Red

20cm Fabric E - Snowflake, Red/Natural

20cm Fabric F - Baubles Red/Natural

20cm Fabric G - Large Holly, Natural

Centre Block

• From Fabric A cut 1 x 5½" strip, crosscut into 2 x 5½" squares and 8 rectangles 3" x 5½"; cut 1 x 3" strip, crosscut into 8 x 3" squares.
• From Fabric B cut 2 x 3" strips, crosscut into 16 x 3" squares.
• From Fabric C cut 1 x 6½" strip, crosscut into 2 x 6½"squares, set aside for Step 8; from remainder of strip cut 2 x 6" squares for centre stars Step 5.

Step 1 - Draw a diagonal line across the 8 x 3" Fabric B squares. Place one square on the right-hand end of a 3" x 5½" Fabric A rectangle as in the diagram and sew along the line. Trim off corner with a ¼" seam allowance. Press triangle outwards, as in diagram. Press seams in one direction.

Step 2 - Repeat at the left-hand end to complete one flying geese unit. Repeat to make total of 4 flying geese units.

Step 3 - Using 4 x 3" Fabric A squares and the 4 flying geese units layout the Block in 3 rows as shown. Sew squares and units together into rows pressing seams towards squares. Sew rows together matching seams and press.

Step 4 - Repeat Steps 1-3 to make a second Centre Block.

Stars

• Cut 2 x 5½" squares of Fuse-Under Fusible Web and trace star template onto paper side of each. Fuse to wrong side of each 6" Fabric C square.

Step 5 - Cut out stars and fuse one to the large square in each Centre Block. Sew stars in place using straight stitch, zigzag or fancy stich of choice.

Borders

• From Fabric D cut 2 x 3" strips, crosscut into 4 x 10½" lengths.

Step 6 - Sew 1 x 10½" strip to top and bottom edges of each Block, press seams towards strip.

• From Fabric A cut 2 x 1" strips, crosscut into 4 x 15½" lengths.

Step 7 - Sew 1 x 15½" strip to each long side of Block, press seams towards strip.

4-Square Unit

• From each of Fabrics E, F & G cut 1 x 6½" strip, crosscut each strip into 2 x 6½" squares, 6 squares in total. Use 2 x 6½"squares, set aside from Centre Block.

Step 8 - Arrange the squares C-E, F-G as in diagram.

Step 9 - Sew C to E and F to G, press seams towards the red square.Sew C-E to F-G. Repeat to make a second 4-square unit.

Step 10 - Sew one 4-square unit to the bottom edge of each Step 6.

Toe

• From Fabric A cut 1 x 4½" strip, crosscut into 2 x 10½" lengths.

Step 11 - Pin one 4½" x 10½" strip to bottom right-hand edge of one Step 9 piece with bottom edges aligned. Sew together pressing seam towards the toe. Pin the remaining 4½" x 10½" strip to bottom left-hand edge of remaining Step 9 piece aligning bottom edges and sew, press seam towards the toe. These form the front and back pieces of the stocking.

Quilting

Step 12 - Place stocking front right side up on batting and cut out leaving a 1" border around the edge. Quilt as desired. Repeat for stocking back.

Step 13 - With stocking front right side up place template on top and cut around the edge. Flip template over and repeat for stocking back. Pin stocking front and back together with right sides facing. Sew together around the edge leaving top edge open. Trim batting from seam allowance to reduce bulk. Turn stocking right side out and press.

Lining

• 80cm Fabric A

Step 14 - Fold Fabric A in half right sides together and using the stocking template cut out two lining stockings. With right sides facing sew lining together around the edge leaving top edge open. Do not turn right side out.

Step 15 - Insert lining into stocking pushing down into foot, aligning side seams and top edges. Pin in place. Baste together around top ⅛" in from the edge.

Binding

• From Fabric B cut 1 x 2½" strip.

Step 16 - Fold one end in ¼" and press. Press strip in half lengthwise. Pin binding to outside top edge starting at the outer seam opposite the toe and leaving ½" at folded end. Do not cut binding yet.

Step 17 - Sew around edge stopping 1" before the start. Trim off excess binding leaving ½" to tuck into folded end at the start. Finish sewing to the start. Fold binding to the inside and hand or machine stitch in place.

Step 18 - For the hanging loop - cut left over binding into a 10" length. Unfold binding, fold long sides into the centre and press. Refold binding strip and press. Stitch down both long sides close to edge. Fold in half and zigzag ends to inside top of edge of stocking.

NOTE - All stockings are made using the same method.
