WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Fabrics are from 'Metallic Christmas' range
  • Fabric quantities listed with each block instructions
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Quilting pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Hand needle
  • Sewing machine with 1/4" foot & walking foot

All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed.

1/4" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the project.

NOTE - All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

INSTRUCTIONS

BOX 1 - EVENING STAR BLOCK

1m Fabric A - New Star, Blue

40cm Fabric B - Large Holly, White

5 x 13" (33cm) squares Legacy cotton batting

Cutting

  • From Fabric A cut 2 x 3?" strips, crosscut into 16 x 3?" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 32 half-square triangles, cut 2 x 21/4"" strips for binding. Cut 6 x 13" squares for base and lining.
  • From Fabric B cut 3 x 31/2"" strips, crosscut into 32 x 31/2"" squares, cut 2 x 3?" strips, crosscut into 16 x 3?" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 32 half-square triangles.

Block 1 - Evening Star

  1. Take 8 Fabric A half-square triangles, 8 Fabric B half-square triangles and 8 Fabric B squares. Layout as in the block below.
  2. Sew together the half-square triangles, press seams toward Fabric A.
  3. Layout the 31/2"" squares and the half-square triangle units as in the block.
  4. Sew blocks together in rows, pressing seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row. Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction.
  5. 5. Repeat steps 1 - 4 to make a total of 4 blocks.
    Layer block, batting and lining. Quilt as desired. Repeat for all 4 blocks. Trim blocks to remove excess batting and lining.
  6. Place batting between 2 Fabric A base squares and quilt as desired. Trim to same size as blocks.
  7. With right sides facing pin 2 blocks together at the sides matching seams. Sew together then zigzag or overlock seam. Open out and press seam to one side. Repeat with remaining two blocks. With right sides facing pin the 2-block units together down the sides. Sew together at sides as before to create the four sides of the box.
  8. With the blocks facing inwards pin quilted base to bottom edge of one block. Starting 1/4"" from the end sew bottom edge of block to base stopping 1/4"" from end. Repeat to sew bottom edge of each block to base. Trim corners and turn right side out. Press well pushing out corners.
  9. Join the 21/4"" Fabric A binding strips on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise. Starting in centre of back block and with raw edges aligned pin binding to inside edge. Sew binding to edge, when back to start overlap binding and

BOX 2 - ROAD TO CALIFORNIA BLOCK

1.2m Fabric A - Holly, Red

30cm Fabric B - Large Holly, Cream

5 x 13" (33cm) squares Legacy cotton batting

Cutting

  • From Fabric A cut 1 x 4 1/2 strip, crosscut into 8 x 4 1/2" squares, 1 x 4?" strip, crosscut into 8 x 4?" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 16 half-square triangles, cut 2 x 2 1/2" strips, crosscut into 24 x 2 1/2" squares, cut 2 x 21/4"" strips for binding. Cut 6 x 13" squares for base and lining.
  • From Fabric B cut 1 x 4?" strip, crosscut into 8 x 4?" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 16 half-square triangles, cut 2 x 2 1/2" strips, crosscut into 24 x 2 1/2" squares.

Block 2 - Road to California

  1. Take 2 Fabric A 4 1/2"squares, 4 Fabric A half-square triangles, 6 Fabric A 2 1/2" squares, 4 Fabric B half-square triangles and 6 Fabric B 2 1/2" squares. Layout as in the block below.
  2. Sew together the half-square triangles, press seams toward Fabric A. Make 4 half square triangle units.
  3. Sew together one Fabric A 2 1/2" square and one Fabric B 2 1/2" square, press seams toward Fabric A. Make 6 x A-B units. Sew together A-B units in pairs to make three 4-square blocks as shown.
  4. Layout the 4 1/2" squares, the half-square triangles and the 4-square blocks as in the block. Sew blocks together in rows, pressing seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row. Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction.
  5. Repeat steps 1 - 4 to make a total of 4 blocks.
    Repeat Steps 6-10 to complete the box.

BOX 3 - FRIENDSHIP STAR BLOCK

60cm Fabric A - Scroll, Green

80cm Fabric B - Dot Snow, Red

40cm Fabric C - Large Holly, Cream

5 x 13" (33cm) squares Legacy cotton batting

Cutting

  • From Fabric A cut 1 x 4?" strip, crosscut into 8 x 4?" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 16 half-square triangles, cut 2 x 21/4"" strips for binding. Cut 2 x 13" squares for base.
  • From Fabric B cut 1 x 4?" strip, crosscut into 8 x 4?" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 16 half-square triangles. Cut 4 x 13" squares for lining.
  • From Fabric C cut 2 x 4?" strips, crosscut into 16 x 4?" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 32 half-square triangles, cut 1 x 4 1/2" strip, crosscut into 4 x 4 1/2" squares.

Block 3 - Friendship Star

  1. Take 4 Fabric A half-square triangles, 4 Fabric B half-square triangles, 8 Fabric C half-square triangles and one 4 1/2" Fabric C square. Layout as in the block below.
  2. Sew together 4 Fabric A and 4 Fabric C half-square triangles, press seams toward Fabric A, sew together 4 Fabric B and 4 Fabric C half-square triangles, press seams toward Fabric B.
  3. Layout the 4 1/2" square and the half-square triangles as in the block.
  4. Sew blocks together in rows, pressing seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row. Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction.
  5. Repeat steps 1 - 4 to make a total of 4 blocks.
    Repeat Steps 6-10 to complete the box.

BOX 4 - CHURN DASH BLOCK

50cm Fabric A - Holly, Green

1.1m Fabric B - New Star, Green

30cm Fabric C - Large Holly, Cream

Cutting

  • From Fabric A cut 1 x 4?" strip, crosscut into 8 x 4?" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 16 half-square triangles. Cut 2 x 13" squares for base.
  • From Fabric B cut 2 x 2 1/2" strips, cut 2 x 21/4"" strips for binding. Cut 4 x 13" squares for lining.
  • From Fabric C cut 1 x 4?" strip, crosscut into 8 x 4?" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 16 half-square triangles, cut 1 x 4 1/2" strip, crosscut into 4 x 4 1/2" squares, cut 2 x 2 1/2" strips.
  • Sew a 2 1/2" Fabric B strip and a 2 1/2" Fabric C strip together lengthways, press seam towards Fabric B. Repeat with remaining 2 1/2" Fabric B and C strips then crosscut into 16 x 4 1/2" lengths.

Block 4 - Churn Dash

  1. Take one Fabric C 4 1/2" square, 4 Fabric A half-square triangles, 4 Fabric C half-square triangles, 4 Fabric B-C 4 1/2" squares. Layout as in the block below.
  2. Sew together 4 Fabric A and 4 Fabric C half-square triangles, press seams toward Fabric A.
  3. Layout the A-C half-square triangles, Fabric B-C 4 1/2" squares and Fabric C 4 1/2" square as in the block.
  4. Sew blocks together in rows, pressing seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row. Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction.
  5. Repeat steps 1 - 4 to make a total of 4 blocks.
    Repeat Steps 6-10 to complete the box.

BOX 5 - BRIGHT HOPE BLOCK

10cm Fabric A - Large Holly, Cream

1m Fabric B - New Star, Red

80cm Fabric C - Scroll, Red

5 x 13" (33cm) squares Legacy cotton batting

Cutting

  • From Fabric A cut 1 x 2 1/2" strip, crosscut into 16 x 2 1/2" squares.
  • From Fabric B cut 4 x 2 1/2" strips, crosscut into 32 rectangles 2 1/2" x 4 1/2". Cut 4 x 13" squares for lining.
  • From Fabric C cut 4 x 2 1/2" strips, crosscut into 32 rectangles 2 1/2" x 4 1/2", cut 2 x 21/4"" strips for binding. Cut 2 x 13" squares for base.

Block 5 - Bright Hope B

  1. Take one Fabric A 2 1/2" square, 8 Fabric B 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles, 8 Fabric C 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles.
  2. Sew a Fabric B 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle to one side of the Fabric A 2 1/2" square. Sew a Fabric C 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle to the end of Fabric B rectangle and side of the Fabric A square.
  3. Sew a Fabric B 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle to the end of Fabric C rectangle and one side of the Fabric A square. Sew a Fabric C 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle to the end of Fabric B rectangle and the side of the Fabric A square To complete sew the remaining portion of the first Fabric B rectangle to end of the last Fabric C rectangle.

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to make a total of 4 blocks. Layout squares as in the block below.

  1. Sew blocks together in rows, pressing seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row. Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction.
  2. Repeat steps 1 - 4 to make a total of 4 blocks.
    Repeat Steps 6-10 to complete the box.
