ABBREVIATIONS

sp = space, lp = loop, st = stitch, beg = beginning, cnr = corner, rep = repeat, yoh = yarn over hook, stch = starting chain, slst = slipstitch, ch = chain, dc = double crochet, htr = half treble, tr = treble, shell = (3tr, 1ch)

GRANNY SQUARE (BASIC PATTERN)

Round 1: Work (5ch, 3tr, 2ch, 3tr, 2ch, 3tr, 2ch, 2tr) in a magic circle and join with slst into 3rd ch of stch, slst into 2ch-cnr.
Round 2: 5ch, 3tr in same 2ch-cnr, * ch 1, (3 tr, 2ch, 3 tr) all in next 2ch-cnr, repeat from * twice, 1 ch, 2tr in next 2ch-cnr, join with slst into 3rd ch of stch, slst into 2ch-cnr .
Round 3: 5ch, 3tr in same 2ch-cnr, * 1ch, 3tr in 1ch-space, 1ch, (3tr, 2ch, 3tr) all in 2ch-cnr, repeat from * twice, 1ch, 3tr in 1ch-sp, 2tr in next 2ch-cnr, join with sl st into 3rd ch of stch, slst into 2ch-cnr
Round 4: 5ch, 3tr in same 2ch-cnr, * (1ch, 3tr in 1ch-space,) twice, 1ch, (3tr, 2ch, 3tr) all in 2ch-cnr, repeat from * twice, (1ch, 3tr in next 1ch-sp) twice, 1ch, 2tr in next 2ch-sp, join

Continue adding rounds, working in pattern established, until you have the right size square required for each part of the dress.

BACK OF BODICE

Work a 15 (16, 17) round granny as per pattern above, finishing in the last cnr, with a slst into the 2ch-sp,

For all sizes:

Round 16(17, 18): 4ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 14 (15, 16) times, 1tr in cnr 2ch-sp, turn
Round 17(18, 19): 3ch 2tr in 1ch-sp, (1ch, 3tr in next 1ch-sp) (15, 16) times, turn

For small size:

Repeat last 2 rows twice more and 2nd last row once, finish off

For medium size:

Repeat last 2 rows three more times and 2nd last row once, finish off

For large size:

Repeat last 2 rows four more times and 2nd last row once, finish off

(This is the neck & shoulders end of the top)

To work the side gusset of the bodice, with right sides facing turn square to the left 90 degrees, and join yarnwith a slst into the 2ch-cnr at the right bottom 2ch-cnr,

Round 1: 4ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 13 (14, 15) times, 1tr in next 1ch-sp, turn
Round 2: 3ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 12 (13, 14) times, 1tr in cnr 2ch-sp, turn
Round 3: 4ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 12 (13, 14) times, 1tr in next 1ch-sp, turn
Round 4: 3ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 11 (12, 13) times, 1tr in cnr 2ch-sp, small only, finish off, (med & large) turn

For med & large only:

Round 5: 4ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 11 (12, 13) times, 1tr in next 1ch-sp, med only, finish off, (large) turn,

For large only:

Turn work 180 deg to make the other side gusset. Count 14, (15, 16) 1ch-sps from the bottom left side of the granny and join yarn with a slst into the next 1ch-sp,

Round 1: 3ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 13 (14, 15) times, 1tr in cnr 2ch-sp, turn
Round 2: 4ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 12 (13, 14) times, 1tr in next 1ch-sp, turn
Round 3: 3ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 12 (13, 14) times, 1tr in cnr 2ch-sp, turn
Round 4: 4ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 11 (12, 13) times, 1tr in next 1ch-sp, small only, finish off, (med & large) turn

Round 19(22, 23): 3ch 2tr, (1ch, 3tr in next 1ch-sp,) 3 times, 1ch, 1tr in last 4ch-sp, turn

Repeat instructions for gusset on bodice leaving the last row of both sides unfinished, (these rows will be used to join the front to the back)
Place the front and back bodices together right sides facing and sew up shoulder seams.
With front facing, finish the last row of front gusset, working a dc into each 1ch-sp of the back gusset while working 3tr into each 1ch-sp of the front gusset. Finish off and repeat for other side gusset.
Turn bodice with right-sides facing and join yarn with a slst into sp at the seam on one side, work 4ch in same sp,

*(3tr in next sp, 1ch), repeat from * until you have completed the round, working 2tr into 1st sp and slst into 3rd ch of stch. (42, 46, 52 shell) Finish off and put bodice aside.

SKIRT

Work 2 x 10 (11, 12) round granny as per pattern above, finishing in the last cnr, with a slst into the 2ch-sp, finish off.
Work 1 square, finishing at the last side with 3tr in 2ch cnr,
Take 1 completed square (A) and hold squares back to back, now continue to work on square (B) 1dc into 2ch-cnr of square (A), 3tr in 2ch-cnr of square (B), 1dc in next 1ch-sp of (A), 3tr in 1ch sp of (B), continue in this manner until you reach the last cnr, 2tr, slst into 3ch of stch on (B), 1dc in last cnr of (A), finish off.
Make another square and repeat above instructions until you have 2 x 2 squares joined together. This makes the front & back of the top of the skirt.
Take one pair of squares, and with right side facing, join yarn at the base of one short side, with a slst into
the 2ch cnr,

Round 1: 4ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 8 (9, 10) times, B1tr in next 1ch sp, turn
Round 2: (3ch, slst into next 1ch sp,) 3ch, (3tr in next 1ch sp, 1ch) 5 (6, 7) times, 3trs in 4ch-sp, turn
Round 3: 4ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 3 (4 5) times, 1tr in next 1ch sp, small only finish, (med & large), turn
Round 4: (3ch, slst into next 1ch sp,) 3ch, (3tr in next 1ch sp, 1ch) (1, 2) times, 3trs in 4ch-sp,

For med only finish, (large), turn

Round 5: 4ch, 3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1tr in next 1ch sp, finish off.

Turn squares around and work the other side,
Join yarn into 1st 1ch-sp,

Round 1: 3ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 8 (9, 10) times, B1tr in next 2ch-cnr, turn
Round 2: 3ch 2tr in 1ch-sp, (1ch, 3tr in next 1ch sp,) 5 (6,7) times, 1tr in 1ch-sp, turn
Round 3: (3ch, slst into next 1ch sp,) twice, 3ch, (3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch) 3 (4, 5) times, 1tr in next 1ch sp,
For small only finish, (med & large), turn
Round 4: 3ch 2trs in 1ch-sp, (1ch, 3tr in next 1ch sp,) (1,2) times, 1tr in 1ch-sp,

For med only finish, (large), turn

Round 5: (3ch, slst into next 1ch sp,) 3ch, 3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1tr in next 1ch sp, finish off.
Repeat for other set of squares.
Sew up side seams on both sets of squares, joining the front to the back,
Slst into the top of the side seam and work (42, 46, 52 shells) evenly around the waist, joining it to the waist of the bodice in the same manner as the gusset seams were joined.
Turn the dress upside down and join yarn at side seam with a slst, and work 50 (56, 60) shell evenly around the bottom of the skirt.
Work 1 round of shell in pattern established marking the middle 1ch-sp at each side seam with a stitch marker,
Continue working rounds in shell pattern, until reaching the marked 1ch-sps, work (3tr 1ch 3tr 1ch) in each marked 1ch sp, continue to end of round,
Work two more rounds without increasing, then work 1 round of increasing, until you have 60 (66, 72) shells in
the round.
Work two more rounds without increasing for med, and 4 rounds for large.

HEM & FINISHING

Work 6 x 9 (10, 11) round granny squares, joining them into a ring by connecting them during the last round of each square as per the skirt pattern above.
When the ring is complete, work a round of shell around one side and join the hem to the rest of the skirt in pattern established in gusset side seam.
Work another round of shell at the bottom of the ring, then work the finishing round of the hem, (1dc, 3ch, 3tr) in each 1ch-sp. Finish off.
To work the finishing rounds for the armholes and the neckline, repeat the last round of hem (1dc, 3ch 3tr) in
each 1ch-sp.
Sew in all ends.
