  • 'Abbey Road' Kung Fu Cotton 8 x 100g balls
  • 1 pair each 5.50mm and 5mm knitting needles or size required to give correct tension.
  • 1 stitch-holder
  • Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure

TENSION

17 sts and 25 rows to 10cm over patt, using 5.50mm needles.

INSTRUCTIONS

BACK

Side Panel (worked sideways)

Using 5.50mm needles, cast on 107 sts (cast on edge is side edge).

Beg Patt - 1st row (RS) - Knit.

2nd row - P1, * K1, P1, rep from * to end. Last 2 rows form patt throughout. Work a further 6 rows patt.

Next row (RS) - Patt to last 3 sts, inc in next st, patt 2 (shoulder edge).

Working extra sts into patt, cont inc one st (as before) at end of every foll 10th row until there are 111 sts. Cont without shaping until work measures 18cm from beg, working last row on WS. Cast off in patt (this edge will be sewn to left side edge of main piece).

Main Piece

Using 5.50mm needles, cast on 87 sts.

Beg 1 x 1 Rib Band - 1st row (RS) - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.

2nd row - P1, * K1, P1, rep from * to end. Rep 1st and 2nd rows until work measures 12cm from beg, ending with a 2nd row.

Beg patt - Work 3 rows patt as for Side Panel.

Beg Turnings - When turning, bring yarn to front of work, slip next st onto right hand needle, yarn back, slip st back onto left hand needle, then turn and proceed as instructed, this avoids holes in work.

Keeping patt correct, 1st row (WS) - Patt 18, turn.

2nd and foll alt rows - Knit to end.

3rd row - Patt 22, turn.

5th row - Patt 26, turn.

7th row - Patt 30, turn.

9th row - Patt 34, turn.

Cont turning in this manner (4 sts extra each time) in alt rows until the row "Patt 66, turn" has been completed.

Next row (RS) - Knit to end.

Next row - Patt across all sts to end. Work 2 rows patt.

Beg Side Edge Shaping - Next row (RS) - K2, inc in next st, knit to last 3 sts, inc in next st, K2.

Working extra sts into patt, inc one st (as before) at each end of every foll 6th row until there are 103 sts. Cont in patt without shaping until shorter side edge measures 33cm from beg, working last row on WS.

Tie a coloured thread at each end of last row to mark beg of armholes as there is no armhole shaping. **

Cont inc one st (as before) at each end of next row, then in every foll 6th row until there are 117 sts.

Work 1 row.

Beg Shaping For Right Shoulder - Keeping patt correct, cast off 3 sts at beg of next row, then at same edge (right shoulder) in every foll alt row until 87 sts rem.

Work 1 row.

Beg Shaping For Both Right And Left Shoulders - Cast off 4 sts at beg of next 8 rows ... 55 sts.

Cast off 5 sts at beg of next 4 rows. Leave rem 35 sts on a stitch-holder.

FRONT

Work as for Back to **, noting side panel will be sewn to right side edge of main piece). Cont inc one st (as before) at each end of next row, then in every foll 6th row until there are 113 sts.

Work 3 rows.

Divide For V Neck - Next row (RS) - Patt 71, turn.

Cont on these 71 sts and inc one st at side edge (beg, as before) in 2nd row and foll 6th row once, AT SAME TIME dec one st at neck edge (inside edge) in every foll alt row 4 times ... 69 sts.

Work 1 row.

Beg Shaping For Shoulder - Cast off 3 sts at beg of next row, then at same edge in every foll alt row 9 times, AT SAME TIME dec one st at neck edge in next row, then in every foll alt row 9 times ... 29 sts.

Cast off 4 sts at shoulder edge in every foll alt row 4 times, AT SAME TIME dec one st at neck edge in every foll alt row 3 times ... 10 sts.

Work 1 row.

Next row (RS) - Cast off 5 sts, patt to end.

Work 1 row. Cast off rem 5 sts.

Slip next st onto a coloured thread and leave (this st will be centre st of neckband), when pieces are sewn together). With RS facing, join yarn to rem 41 sts and patt to end.

Inc one st at side edge (as before) in 2nd row and foll 6th row once, AT SAME TIME dec one st at neck edge (inside edge) in every foll alt row 4 times ... 39 sts. Dec one st at neck edge only in every foll alt row 11 times ... 28 sts.

Beg Shaping For Shoulder - Cast off 4 sts at beg (WS of shoulder) of next row, then in every foll alt row 3 times, AT SAME TIME dec one st at neck edge in every foll alt row twice ... 10 sts.

Work 1 row.

Next row (WS) - Cast off 5 sts, patt to end.

Work 1 row. Cast off rem 5 sts.

SLEEVE EXTENSIONS (make 2)

Using 5.50mm needles, cast on 33 sts.

Beg Patt - Work 6 rows patt as for Side Panel of Back.Working extra sts into patt, inc one st at each end of next row, then in every foll 6th row until there are 49 sts.

Cont in patt without shaping until work measures 26cm from beg, working last row on WS. Cast off loosely.

NECKBAND

Using mattress st seam, join side panels to Back and Front main pieces. Join right shoulder seams. With RS facing and using 5mm needles, knit up 40 sts evenly along left side of neck, K1 (centre st), knit up 40 sts evenly along right side of neck, then knit across sts from back stitch-holder ... 116 sts.

1st row (WS) - * K1, P1, rep from * to end.

2nd row - Rib to within 2 sts of centre st, ybk, sl 1 knitways, K1, psso, K1 (centre st), K2tog, rib to end.

3rd row - Rib to within 2 sts of centre st, K2tog, P1, K2tog tbl, rib to end. Rep 2nd and 3rd rows until Neckband measures 3cm, ending with 3rd row. Cast off in rib.

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS. Join left shoulder and neckband seam. Sew in Sleeve extensions, evenly between coloured threads, placing centre of Sleeve to shoulder seams. Join side and Sleeve seams, leaving rows below lower band unsewn.
