The Guide to Drawing Artist Supplies

At Spotlight, customers can easily find the supplies they need for their craft. Of course, Spotlight offers more than just common craft supplies, since we also stock art supplies for artists. If you are just getting started with drawing, here are some of the essentials you will need for drawing!

What Is the First Thing I Will Need for My Drawing Projects?

One of the first things you will need for your drawing projects is a good set of drawing pencils. These pencils can come in a variety of graphite grades, so be sure to look for a set that includes both harder and softer graphite pencils.

Once you become a little more experienced, you will notice that there are some differences between the softer and the harder graphite pencils. Softer graphite pencils tend to leave darker marks, but they tend to need more sharpening. On the opposite side of that, harder graphite pencils leave softer marks, but they don’t need as much sharpening as the softer pencils.

What Is the Second Thing I Will Need for My Drawing Projects?

The second thing needed for your drawing projects is a good sketchbook. There is a difference between a sketchbook and a collection of drawing paper though, because a real artist requires a thick sketchbook he will use daily.

When you choose a sketchbook as an artist, make sure that you choose a sketchbook to match your needs. If you are dedicated to art and intent on using that sketchbook daily, you will need quite a big sketchbook. However, if you intend on using a sketchbook as a hobby, then you can use one of the thinner options out there.

What Is the Third Thing I Will Need for My Drawing Projects?

It goes without saying that a drawing project requires an eraser too. While choosing an eraser might seem straightforward to start, it is not quite as simple. There are different types of erasers, each with their own specific benefits; this includes rubber erasers, kneaded erasers, plastic erasers, and gum erasers.

Rubber erasers

Rubber erasers are usually recommended for graphite pencils. In this case, the eraser uses friction to remove material from your drawing surface.

Kneaded erasers

Opposed to friction, the kneaded eraser lifts material from the surface. Therefore, artists can also use different techniques to create special marks on their drawing surface with the eraser.

Gum erasers

Gum erasers are recommended for artists who use delicate drawing surfaces. Like the rubber eraser, the gum eraser removes material from the drawing surface through friction. However, the eraser crumbles while it erases, ensuring a delicate drawing surface does not get damaged.

Plastic erasers

Artists who need to remove dark marks from their drawing surface best use a plastic eraser, since the plastic eraser can almost remove everything. However, plastic erasers are less suitable for delicate surfaces, so it is recommended to have another eraser on-hand if you intend on working with more delicate materials in the future.

What Different Types of Paper Could I Choose for My Artwork?

There are different types of paper you could use for your artwork. The main types of paper include drawing paper, charcoal paper, and Bristol paper.

  • Drawing paper: paper of medium thickness and strength, most suitable for drawing with graphite, charcoal, and coloured pencils.
  • Charcoal paper: heavier paper with lightweight qualities. Paper seems semi-transparent and is therefore most suitable for creating texture in your artwork.
  • Bristol paper: smooth drawing paper, but heavier than most paper types available today. Bristol paper is most suitable for artists who like to create detailed work.
