What do tog ratings mean and why are they important?

You may notice that some of our duvet inners feature a tog rating, and this is a measurement of thermal insulation. Tog rating denotes the duvet filling's ability to trap air and indicates the thickness, weight and how toasty your new quilt is likely to be. A lower number will indicate a lower level of insulation and would be perfect for those sticky summer nights. However, a higher tog rating will keep you warm and toasty throughout the winter. In general conditions, it is suggested that a tog value of 3.5 to 7.5 is suitable for summer and 13.5 to 15.0 in winter.

Which of these duvet inners would be right for me?

Well, that is a matter of personal preference really, and the duvet you choose will depend on your own heat needs and budget. Our hollow fibre quilts are extremely popular duvet inners, as they are affordable, often machine washable, and are also available in a hypoallergenic version. This synthetic material is easy to care for, and hollow fibre duvets should last around five years. Mother Nature is hard to beat, and a duvet that is filled with natural fibres is sure to keep you warm and toasty, whatever the weather.

Plus, duvets that are filled with feather and down could last up to a decade if cared for properly. These retain heat and help to prevent overheating while you sleep. However, natural duvet inners, such as feathers, cannot be washed and may aggravate various allergies, skin conditions and respiratory disorders. Wool is also great for retaining heat, and it is also naturally more resistant to the build-up of allergens, such as dust mites. It needs to be washed gently at a low temperature, as a high one will negatively affect the duvet inners lifespan. Alternately, microfiber is very lightweight and exceptionally soft - it will feel light as you wrap it around you, with some people preferring this to a more substantial option. It is also important to consider the size of quilt that you will need, with measurements being made to standard bed sizes. We have single, double, queen size, and king size available.

How should I care for my duvet inner?

Well, that does depend on which of our duvets you have chosen, and we wholeheartedly recommend that you read the manufacturer's care instructions thoroughly before you begin. We thoroughly recommend that you use duvet protectors and pillow protectors to extend the life of your new bedding. Some of our duvets may be machine washable, particularly the synthetic options. Although, it is not recommended that you wash natural fibres, such as feathers and down, in the washing machine. Always ensure that your duvet is thoroughly dried before returning it to the bed.
