How To Keep Your Home Cooler?

It is easier to warm up than it is to cool down, this much is known. But how can you keep your home a little cooler when temperatures outside get a little too warm? Well, you could use one of the cooling products from Spotlight in combination with one of our many tips.

Is Opening Windows A Good Idea?

Most people automatically open a window when temperatures inside the house get a little unbearable. While this is a natural response, opening the wrong window could actually make the problem a whole lot worse.

One of the windows you should always avoid opening are south-facing windows, these are most subject to sunlight. In addition to keeping these windows closed, you should also cover them with an appropriate window dressing, this will prevent some of the heat and sunlight entering your home.

There are some instances where you can open a window though, mainly when you can achieve a bit of a draft through. When you are able to get a bit of a draft, you can get a natural fan effect inside your home. Unfortunately, it will do little for the actual temperature inside your home during the day. Opening the windows when it gets cooler at night and closing them during the day can have an influence on temperature.

Will Poor Insulation Influence My Ability To Reduce The Temperature Inside My Home?

Poor insulation is often associated with the loss of heat in colder temperatures, but did you know that poor insulation in your home can also cause an increase in temperatures during the summer? In fact, insulation can also keep the heat outside your home. So, having poor insulation can definitely have a negative influence on your home environment.

Homeowners who have an air conditioning system should also check their insulation. Poor insulation can cause cool air to be lost inside the home a lot easier, which in turn can reduce the effectiveness of your air conditioner.

What Additional Tips Can I Use To Reduce Temperatures Inside My Home?

We already provided an overview of the main factors to consider when you want to reduce the temperature inside your home when outside temperatures get a little too unbearable. However, there are other small things you can do to keep warmer temperatures at bay. Here are some of our favourite tips.

Check for heat-generating appliances - Many technology and appliances inside your home actually generate heat, this is the case for the obvious items such as the cooker, but also less obvious items such as your television and your computer. If you have lots of appliances on when they do not need to be on, turn them off to keep the temperature inside the house a little lower.

Strategically place your fans - Did you know that the way you place your fans can make the more or less effective? Desk fans have become incredibly popular, mainly due to the fact that they provide immediate cool air when we are too hot. But it is actually better to place your fan on the floor and aim it upwards. The reason for that is that the warm air goes to the top of your home, and the cool air remains on the bottom. So, by placing the fan on the floor, you are able to circulate cooler air.

There are other ways to make your fan a little more effective. One tried and tested method is to take a box of ice and place it in front of the fan, this will make the released air considerably cooler and can make your fan more effective. Of course, it is important to remember that ice can melt quickly in hot temperatures. To get a longer lifespan for your ice, choose a block instead of smaller ice cubes.
