Which of your child's sewing patterns should I choose?

Well, that is up to you really and your intended wearer of course! There are some things that you should consider when choosing a sewing pattern for children's clothes -

Sizing: When you are making clothes using patterns, you will find that some of them are one sized, whereas, others are multi-sized. These sizing guides are standard sizes. However, we recommend that you take correct measurements of your intended wearer prior to starting your project. This is particularly important for children as they are constantly growing and ill-fitting clothes can make them uncomfortable.

Purpose: One of the most important things to consider when you are choosing a sewing pattern for a child's clothes, is the intended purpose of the garment. Take into consideration whether you are looking for clothes that are suitable for everyday wear, a formal outfit for a big event, or perhaps a fancy dress costume for your little monster.

Material: Our sewing patterns will recommend one, or several, types of fabric and using this will help to ensure that the final piece is looking just like the image shown. However, if you do wish to make a change in the fabric, choose one that is a similar weight to maintain the structure of the garment. We recommend choosing a fabric that is breathable and versatile, helping to keep your little one comfortable whatever they are doing.

Fasteners: You should also check the fasteners that the pattern recommends. These can be changed, but this may be a job for an experienced seamstress rather than a beginner. Small items that can come loose, such as buttons, can be a choking hazard for young children. Whereas, children who are beginning to show independence and want to start dressing themselves may prefer a zip or stud fastenings.

The individual: The most important thing to consider is the wishes and desires of your intended wearer if they like the outfit they will have lots more fun wearing it.

Do you have any tips for reading a pattern?

If you are new to the craft and hoping to up your sewing game with one of our stylish children's patterns, check out our top tips to help with reading it. When you first receive your pattern, they usually contain an envelope which holds all the pattern pieces and the instructions. We recommend that you read all instructions carefully prior to beginning your creation.

All sizings are in line with international standards, check the size guide, and take recent measurements of your intended wearer. This is particularly important for children as they grow and develop at such a rapid rate. Consider the yardage requirements and the fabric tips, and use this as a guide when shopping our delightful range of fabrics. We always recommend purchasing extra fabric than what the pattern requests, just to be on the safe side. The key and glossary will outline what each of the individual markings means and whether the pattern includes seam allowance.
