WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • 1 panel fabric (A) whale panel – colbalt
  • 2 yards fabric (B) midnight 82 – peppered cotton
  • 1 ⅓ yards fabric (C) sea life scenic – colbalt
  • 1 yard fabric (D) seashell – navy
  • ⅔ yard fabric E continuous block yardage – cobalt
  • ¾ yard fabric (F) fish and seaweed – navy
  • ¾ yard fabric (G) coral reef- navy
  • ⅜ yard fabric (H) diving whale – cyan
  • 5 ⅛ yard backing sea life scenic – cobalt
  • 71” x 91” batting
  • Quilting and sewing supplies

INSTRUCTIONS

Cutting

Please note: All strips are cut across the width of fabric (WOF) from selvage to selvage edge unless otherwise noted.

  • WOF= Width of Fabric
  • LOF = Length of Fabric

Fabric A (Whale Panel – Cobalt):

  • Fussy cut (1) 23 ½” x 43 ½” rectangle, centered on the panel.

Fabric B (midnight peppered cottons – midnight), cut:

  • (3) 2” x WOF strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut (2) 2” x 43 ½” strips.
  • (2) 2” x 26 ½” WOF strips.
  • (3) 2” x WOF strips, sub-cut (12) 2” x 10” strips.
  • (4) 2” x WOF strips, sub-cut (12) 2” x 13” strips.
  • (12) 1 ½” x WOF strips, sub-cut (12) 1 ½” x 22 ½” strips and (12) 1 ½” x 12 ½” strips.
  • (1) 1 ¼” x WOF strip, sub-cut (4) 1 ¼” x 10” strips.
  • (2) 1 ¼” x WOF strips, sub-cut (4) 1 ¼” x 11 ½” strips.
  • (8) 2 ½” x WOF strips for the binding.

Fabric C (sea life scenic – cobalt), cut:

  • (2) 5 ½” x 45 ½” LOF strips.
  • From the remaining fabric, cut (2) 5 ½” x 25 ½” WOF strips.

Fabric D (seashell – navy), cut:

  • (1) 5 ½” x WOF strip, sub-cut (4) 5 ½” squares.
  • (4) 3 ½” x WOF strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut (2) 3 ½” x 77 ½” strips.
  • (4) 3 ½” x WOF strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut (2) 3 ½” x 63 ½” strips.

Fabric E (continuous block yardage – cobalt):

  • Fussy cut (6) 10” squares, each centered on a block.

Fabric F (fish and seaweed – navy), cut:

  • (1) 22 ½” x WOF strip, sub-cut (4) 22 ½” x 4 ½” strips and (4) 4 ½” x 12 ½” strips.

Fabric G (coral reef- navy), cut:

  • (1) 22 ½” x WOF strip, sub-cut (4) 22 ½” x 4 ½” strips and (4) 4 ½” x 12 ½” strips.

Fabric H (diving whale – cyan), cut:

  • (1) 10” x WOF strip, sub-cut (2) 10” squares.

Backing (sea life scenic – cobalt), cut:

  • (2) 91” x WOF strips. Sew the strips together and trim to 71” x 91” to make the back.

Sewing

Sew using a ¼” seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise indicated. Always press towards the darker fabric while assembling, unless otherwise noted by the arrows.

 


Block Assembly

Note: The arrows in figures represent the fabric print direction. Pay attention to the fabric and unit orientations when assembling the various components.

Step 1 - Sew (1) 2” x 43 ½” Fabric B strip to each side of the 23 ½” x 43 ½” Fabric A rectangle. Sew (1) 2” x 26 ½” Fabric B strip to the top and to the bottom of the Fabric A rectangle to make the Center Block (Fig. 1). Trim the block to measure 25 ½” x 45 ½”.

Step 2 -Sew (1) 5 ½” Fabric D square to each end of (1) 5 ½” x 25 ½” Fabric C strip to make the Inner Top Border (Fig. 2). Repeat to make the Inner Bottom Border.

Step 3 - Sew (1) 2” x 10” Fabric B strip to each side of (1) 10” Fabric E square. Sew (1) 2” x 13” Fabric B strip to the top and to the bottom of the Fabric E square to make (1) Block One square (Fig. 3). Trim the block to measure 11 ½” x 11 ½”. Repeat to make (6) Block One squares total

Step 4 - Sew (1) 1 ¼” x 10” Fabric B strip to each side of (1) 10” Fabric H square. Sew (1) 1 ¼” x 11 ½” Fabric B strip to the top and to the bottom of the Fabric H square to make (1) 11 ½” x 11 ½” Block Two square (Fig. 4). Repeat to make a second Block Two square.

Step 5 - Sew together (1) 1 ½” x 22 ½” Fabric B strip, (1) 4 ½” x 22 ½” Fabric F strip, (1) 1 ½” x 22 ½” Fabric B strip, (1) 4 ½” x 22 ½” Fabric G strip and (1) 1 ½” x 22 ½” Fabric B strip, lengthwise and in that order from left to right, to make (1) Unit 1 strip (Fig. 5). Repeat to make a second Unit 1 strip.

Step 6 - Sew together (1) 1 ½” x 22 ½” Fabric B strip, (1) 4 ½” x 22 ½” Fabric G strip, (1) 1 ½” x 22 ½” Fabric B strip, (1) 4 ½” x 22 ½” Fabric F strip and (1) 1 ½” x 22 ½” Fabric B strip, lengthwise and in that order from left to right, to make (1) Unit 2 strip (Fig. 6). Repeat to make a second Unit 2 strip.

Step 7 - Sew together (1) 1 ½” x 12 ½” Fabric B strip, (1) 4 ½” x 12 ½” Fabric F strip, (1) 1 ½” x 12 ½” Fabric B strip, (1) 4 ½” x 22 ½” Fabric G strip and (1) 1 ½” x 12 ½” Fabric B strip, lengthwise and in that order from top to bottom, to make (1) Unit 3 strip (Fig. 7). Repeat to make a second Unit 3 strip.

Step 8 -  Sew together (1) 1 ½” x 12 ½” Fabric B strip, (1) 4 ½” x 12 ½” Fabric G strip, (1) 1 ½” x 12 ½” Fabric B strip, (1) 4 ½” x 22 ½” Fabric F strip and (1) 1 ½” x 12 ½” Fabric B strip, lengthwise and in that order from top to bottom, to make (1) Unit 4 strip (Fig. 8). Repeat to make a second Unit 4 strip.

Step 9 - Sew (1) Unit 1 strip to the top and to the bottom of (1) Block Two square to make the Outer Left Side Border (Fig. 9).

Step 10 -  Sew (1) Unit 2 strip to the top and to the bottom of (1) Block Two square to make the Outer Right-Side Border (Fig. 10).

Step 11 - Sew together (3) Block One squares and (2) Unit 3 strips, end to end and alternating them from left to right, to make the Outer Top Border (Fig. 11).

Step 12 - Sew together (3) Block One squares and (2) Unit 4 strips, end to end and alternating them from left to right, to make the Outer Bottom Border (Fig. 12).


Quilt Top Assembly

(Follow the Quilt Layout while assembling the quilt top.)

Step 13 - Sew (1) 5 ½” x 45 ½” Fabric C strip to each side of the Centre Block.

Step 14 - Sew the Inner Top Border and Inner Bottom Border to the top and to the bottom of the Centre Block.

Step 15 - Sew the Outer Left Side Border and Outer Right-Side Border to the left and to the right sides of the Centre Block.

Step 16 - Sew the Outer Top Border and Outer Bottom Border to the top and to the bottom of the Centre Block.

Step 17 -  Sew (1) 3 ½” x 77 ½” Fabric D strip to each side of the Centre Block. Sew (1) 3 ½” x 63 ½” Fabric D strip to the top and to the bottom of the Centre Block to make the quilt top.


Layering, Quilting and Finishing

Step 18 - Press the quilt top and 71” x 91” backing well. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, pressed quilt top (right side up) and baste. Quilt as desired and trim excess batting and backing when quilting is complete.


Binding

Step 19 - Cut the ends of the (8) Fabric B binding strips at a 45-degree angle and sew end to end to make (1) continuous piece of binding. Fold in half lengthwise and press wrong sides together.

Step 20 - Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, raw edges together. Turn the folded edge to the back, and hand stitch in place.
