Check your seam allowance by sewing 3, 2.5" squares together in a row. This should finish at 6.5". If not adjust your seam to get correct seam before sewing quilt
Some of the assembly of this quilt is made from sewing strips together then subcutting to the unit size. This reduces the amount of cutting and sewing of small pieces.
WOF = Width of Fabric
Cutting
- Using Fabric A cut out each panel square to 11.5". This is where the 12.5" square ruler comes in very handy
- Using Fabric B cut 6 strips of 5" WOF - B1
- Using Fabric C cut 3 strips of 3" WOF - C1
- Using Fabric C cut 6 strips of 1.5" WOF from these cut 12 units at 16.5" - C2
- Using Fabric C cut 6 strips of 1.5" WOF - C3
- Using Fabric D cut 6 strips of 5.5" WOF for Border D1
- Using Fabric E cut 9 x 6" squares from these squares cut at 3" horizontally and vertically to give 4 x 3" squares from each 6" square
- Using Fabric F 7 strips of 2.5" WOF for binding
Assembly
- Using B1 and C1 strips sew a B1 to either side of C1. Press seams towards B1 strips Width will equal 11.5"
- Cut the sewn B1 C1 strips into 36 units of 3" wedges now known as BC1. Using 18 of these wedges sew a E1 piece to either end of the wedge now known as BCE
- Using A1 Blocks sew a BC1 to the upper and lower sides of panel blocks. Press the seams away from center. ABC
- Using ABC attach the BCE strips to the other sides of the block nesting seams to complete blocks. Blocks should now measure 16.5"
- Layout blocks to work out the placement. Using C2 attach to the upper and lower of each block in the top and bottom rows of your quilt. Then sew the middle blocks to the upper and lower edges to complete your rows.
- Using C3 strips, cut 2 of these strips in half and attach each half to the remaining four strips using the diagonal method with right sides of fabric facing each other. Trim the seam to 1/4" and press open. Cut these strips to 53" these will be added to the rows to form the quilt top
- Using Fabric F, matching your Santa rings as best as possible, sew the borders with a straight seam to make 2 borders 53". Attach these to the top and bottom of the quilt. Pin at the centre start and end of the seam and in between. Attach to the quilt. The two sides need to be made at 63" and attach to the quilt in the same manner.
- Binding strips will be sewn together using the diagonal method to create one long strip to go around the quilt. Press the seams open and trim. Then press the binding in half-width ways. Put aside ready to bind the quilt.
- Baste quilt the top to the wadding and backing. You can use safety pins or basting spray.
- Quilt as desired. I made ribbon patterns in the sashings and highlighted parts of the panel blocks.
- Attach the binding, label and quilt is ready to use.
