How can I maintain the performance of craft scissors?

The manner in which you maintain your scissors may depend on what you tend to use them for. If you are cutting fabrics regularly, it is essential to wipe the blade after each use with a soft dry cloth. This will help to prevent lint and other small items from getting into the mechanics. If you are purchasing shears or scissors for cutting fabric, try to ensure that they are only used for this purpose. Store them with your textile supplies to prevent anyone else using them for another purpose, or perhaps add some tape to the side to clearly mark their intended use.

If your scissors are not performing to their best, use a penetrating lubricant around the pivot area. Open and close the scissors a few times after you have done this to ensure that the oil is correctly worked into the joint, and then remove any excess with a cloth. If your scissors get dirty, you can wash them in warm water with a small amount of dish soap. Alternatively, clean scissors with rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball to remove any sticky residue. Ensure that they have been rinsed and dried thoroughly after to prevent the scissors from rusting.

Is there anything else I need to remember?

Our collection of craft scissors and knives are very sharp, and it is critical that you always ensure that they are kept away from children at all times. Ensure that all equipment is in excellent condition before you behind cutting, and never cut towards your body or your hands. Always cover the blade of a knife when it is not on use, do not leave unattended, and never put unprotected knives or scissors in your bag or pocket. It is always important to be careful when you are using blades.
