Cutting Instructions

Templates -

A - Diamond

B - Short Sashing

C - Sides

D - Half triangle corners

E - Triangle ends

Cut Template shapes A, B, C and E from your templastic ensuring that you copy across any markings.

1 x piece of shape D and one 1 x piece of shape D reversed is required for the top half triangle corners.

Cut 4 x 6.5" wide strips from WOF from each of the Purple Daze fabrics.

Cut 21 x 1.5" wide strips from WOF from the sashing fabric. These will be used for both the long and short sashings.

Cut 12 x 2.5" wide strips from WOF from the Purple Daze Flower Medalliions fabric. These will be used for both the outside border of the quilt and binding.

Using Template A cut your Diamond Shapes from each of the 6.5" wide strips of each Purple Daze fabric.

Using Template C cut your Side (half diamond) pieces from the 6.5" wide strips of each Purple Daze fabric.

Using Template E cut your End triangle pieces from the 6.5" wide strips of each Purple Daze fabric.

Note: Each strip of the Purple Daze fabrics will yield 5 x Template A pieces and provide enough choice for you to mix and match your fabrics within the quilt.

Using Template B cut 54 short sashing pieces from the 1.5" wide sashing strips.

Cut the following lengths for the long sashing pieces.

Note: You will need to join strips to create the longest sashing pieces -

  • 1 x 18.5"
  • 1 x 34.5"
  • 1 x 51"
  • 1 x 65.5"
  • 2 x 75"
  • 1 x 58"
  • 1 x 41.5"
  • 1 x 25.5"
  • 1 x 9.5"

Step 1 - Following Diagram 1 and using your chosen fabric layout and with right sides together, join 1 piece Template A with 1 piece Template B. Press seams to one side.

Step 2 - Repeat Step 1 for all Template A and B pieces ensuring that each Template A piece is joined with a Template B on one side. Press seams.

Step 3 - With your sewn A/B pieces in their chosen order and referring to Diagram 2, join the diamonds to each other in rows, noting that your rows are being formed in a diagonal direction.

Step 4 - Referring to the Layout Diagram, attach Template C pieces to the ends of the diamond rows. Press seams to one side. Ensure that you keep your rows in order.

Step 5 - Referring to the Layout Diagram, attach piece D and D reverse to the ends of the corresponding rows.

Step 6 - Referring back to the Layout Diagram, attach Template E pieces to the top and bottom of the quilt rows. Press seams to one side. Ensure that you keep your rows in order.

Step 7 - Referring back to the Layout Diagram and with right sides facing, join the long sashing strip to one side of each row ensuring that you are matching the lengths of your long strips with the appropriate length row. Note that these will need to be trimmed once the quilt top is fully sewn together. Press seams to one side.

Step 8 - Referring to Diagram 3 and before joining the other side of the Sashing to the row, with a marking pen, rule a faint line along the back side of the sashing strip following the seam line from the sewn Template A and B pieces. This will be used as a pinning point to ensure that the lines of the diamond pieces and short sashings match up.

Step 9 - With right sides together, commence joining your rows to each other. Pin the fabric to match the drawn line on the sashing with its matching seam line on the diamond/sashing row. It is important to match these to ensure the diamonds and sashings all match up once the quilt top is completed.

Step 10 - Repeat Step 8 to join all long rows to each other ensuring that you are matching seams and that diamonds are level across the quilt top. Press seams.

Step 11 - Once all of your rows are joined and the quilt top is in one piece, trim the long sashing strips to match the row ends, creating a neat side edge.

Step 12 - Cut two of the 2.5" border strips to 49" long.

Step 13 - With right sides facing join top and bottom border strips to the quilt top. Press seams.

Step 14 - Cut two of the 2.5" border strips to 65" long.

Step 15 - With right sides facing join the side border strips to the quilt top. Press seams.

Quilt top is now complete!

Step 16 - Cut backing fabric in half so that you have two 2m lengths. Join together on the long side to create a large backing piece. Press seams.

Step 17 - Lay out the backing, batting and quilt top. Baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 18 - Join binding strips, fold in half and iron. Sew binding around quilt.
