NURSERY POP QUILT

Nursery Pop Quilt Project

Level: Intermediate

What You'll Need:

  • 2 x Jelly Roll A (includes border & binding)
  • 1 x Jelly Roll B
  • 1.2m Backing fabric of choice
  • 1.2m square Cotton batting
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Template plastic
  • Quilting pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Hand needle
  • Sewing machine with ¼" foot & walking foot

¼" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Quilt measures: 40½" x 40½" (103cm x 103cm)

INSTRUCTIONS

Cutting

  • Open one Fabric A Jelly Roll, open out fabric strips and press flat. Separate strips into 5 sets with one of each design in each set. Set aside.
  • Open Fabric B Jelly Roll, leave strips folded in half and press flat. Separate strips into 5 sets with one of each design in each set. Take one set and cut strips lengthways into various widths from 1" to 2¼". Do this randomly. Keeping sets together repeat for all sets. Open out strips and press flat.

Note - Do not cut 2nd Fabric A Jelly Roll.


Strip Sets

Step 1 - Take one Fabric A set and one Fabric B set which has been cut into various widths and arrange in random order, varying the colours and widths.

Step 2 - With right sides facing, sew the strips together in pairs and then sew together pairs of four strips etc. Alternate sewing the strips from top to bottom and vice versa to help keep the strips straight and flat. Press seams in one direction.

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to make 5 strip sets.


Template

Step 3 - Cut out a 5" square from template plastic. Draw a diagonal line across the square.


Diagonal Stripe Squares

Step 4 - Place one strip set on a cutting mat. Position the 5" square template on the top left-hand end aligning the diagonal line of the template along a seam line. When happy with placement use a rotary cutter to cut out the square. Move the template on the strip set aligning the diagonal line of the template along a seam line to cut out another diagonal square. Continue moving the template and cutting out squares.

Step 5 - Repeat Step 4 to cut squares from all 5 strip sets. You will need 64 diagonal stripe squares.


Blocks

Step 6 - Arrange 4 diagonal stripe squares with a small triangle in the centre as in photo.

Step 7 - Sew top 2 squares together, press seam to right. Sew bottom 2 squares together, press seam to left. Sew top and bottom rows together to complete one block. Repeat to make a total of 16 blocks.


Quilt Top

Step 8 - Arrange blocks into 4 rows with 4 blocks in each row.

Step 9 - Sew together blocks in each row, pressing seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row. Sew rows together pressing seams in one direction.


Border

Step 10 - Open remaining Fabric A Jelly Roll and select 4 strips of one design for borders. Open out strips and press flat. Sew one strip to each side of the quilt. Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric. Sew remaining strips to the top and bottom of the quilt, press and trim off any excess fabric.


To Finish

Step 11 - Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 12 - From Fabric A Jelly Roll select 4 strips of one design for binding. Join the 4x 2½" strips on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
