Life Is Better With A Cat Quilt Project

What You'll Need:

Fabrics are from 'Life is Better with a Cat' range

  • 50cm Fabric A - Frames, Multi
  • 50cm Fabric B - Patch, Multi
  • 1m Fabric C - Tossed, Aqua
  • 70cm Fabric D - Word, Black
  • 90cm Fabric E - Packed, Multi (includes binding)
  • 1.3m x 250cm wide Backing fabric of choice
  • 1.3m Legacy cotton/bamboo batting
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Quilting pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Hand needle
  • Clear Template Plastic
  • Frixion marker
  • Sewing machine with 1/4" foot & walking foot

All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed.

1/4" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.

INSTRUCTIONS

Template

Using template plastic make a 4" square template.


Cutting

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

  • From Fabric A use the 4" square template to Fussy cut 24 x 4" squares of the cat faces, 3 of each design.
  • From Fabric B use the 4" square template to Fussy cut 18 x 4" squares of cat patches, moving the template to get a variety of squares.
  • From Fabric C cut 7 x 3 1/4" strips, crosscut strips into 3 1/4" squares for a total of 84 x 3 1/4" squares, then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 168 half-square triangles.
  • From Fabric D cut 5 x 4 1/4" strip, crosscut strips into 4 1/4" squares for a total of 48 x 4 1/4" squares, then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 96 half-square triangles.
  • From Fabric E cut 4 x 4 1/4" strips, crosscut strips into 4 1/4" squares for a total of 36 x 4 1/4" squares, then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 72 half-square triangles.
  • From Fabric C cut 6 x 2 1/4" strips for border.
  • From Fabric D cut 6 x 2 �" strips for binding

Sewing

BLOCK A uses 24 x 4" Fabric A squares, 96 Fabric C half-square triangles & 96 Fabric D half-square triangles.

Step 1 - Sew the long side of a Fabric C half-square triangle to one side of a Fabric A square and press seam towards triangle. Sew another Fabric C half-square triangle to the opposite side of the square, press seam towards triangle. Sew Fabric C half-square triangles to the remaining two sides and press seams towards the triangles.

Step 2 - Sew the long side of a Fabric D half-square triangle to one side Step 1 and press seam towards triangle. Sew another Fabric D half-square triangle to the opposite side of the square, press seam towards triangle. Sew Fabric D half-square triangles to the remaining two sides and press seams towards the triangles. This completes Block A.

Step 3 - Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to make a total of 24 Block A.


BLOCK B uses 18 x 4" Fabric B squares, 72 Fabric C half-square triangles & 72 Fabric E half-square triangles.

Step 4 - As in Step 1 sew Fabric C half-square triangles to Fabric B squares. Then as in Step 2 sew Fabric E half-square triangles to the finished C-B square to make a total of 18 Block B.

Quilt Top

Step 5 - Refer to layout diagram for block placement or if preferred arrange blocks as desired.

Step 6 - Sew bocks together in each row matching seams. Press seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row.

Step 7 - Sew rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction.


Borders

Step 8 - Take the 6 x 2 1/4" Fabric C border strips, cut 2 in half and sew one half to the end of each of the remaining 4 strips, pressing seam open.

Step 9 - Sew one strip to each side of the quilt top, press seams towards border and trim off excess fabric.

Step 10 - Sew remaining strips to top and bottom edges, press seams towards border and trim off excess fabric.

TO FINISH

Step 11 - Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 12 - Join the 6 x 2�" binding strips on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
