BATIKS QUILT
Level: Intermediate
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
Fabrics are from 'Indonesian Batiks' range
- 40cm Fabric A - Mosaic, Aqua
- 60cm Fabric B - Leaves, Teal
- 60cm Fabric C - Olives, Sea
- 50cm Fabric D - Butterfly, Mint/Pink
- 50cm Fabric E - Sprig, Blue/Green
- 40cm Fabric F - Olives, Blue/Green
- 50cm Fabric G - Olives, Purple
- 70cm Fabric H- Leaves, Purple (includes binding)
- 30cm Fabric I - Floral, Multi
- 1.7m x 250cm wide Backing fabric or 3.4m of Batik of choice
- 1.7m Legacy cotton/bamboo batting
- Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
- Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
- Quilting pins, tape measure
- Scissors, seam ripper
- Hand needle
- Sewing machine with 1/4" foot & walking foot
All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed. 1/4" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated. Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.
INSTRUCTIONS
CUTTING
All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.
- From Fabric A cut - 1 x 6" strip, crosscut into 7 x 6" squares - 2 x 4" strips, crosscut into 6 x 4" squares and 8 rectangles 6" x 4".
- From Fabric B cut - 1 x 6" strip, crosscut into 4 x 6" squares - 4 x 4" strips, crosscut into 2 x 4" squares and 24 rectangles 6" x 4".
- From Fabric C cut - 2 x 6" strips, crosscut into 12 x 6" squares - 2 x 4" strips, crosscut into 10 x 4" squares and 4 rectangles 6" x 4".
- From Fabric D cut - 1 x 6" strip, crosscut into 2 x 6" squares - 3 x 4" strips, crosscut into 20 rectangles 6" x 4".
- From Fabric E cut - 2 x 6" strips, crosscut into 10 x 6" squares - 1 x 4" strip, crosscut into 8 x 4" squares.
- From Fabric F cut - 3 x 4" strips, crosscut into 16 rectangles 6" x 4".
- From Fabric G cut - 2 x 6" strips, crosscut into 8 x 6" squares - 1 x 4" strip, crosscut into 6 x 4" squares.
- From Fabric H cut - 2 x 4" strips, crosscut into 12 rectangles 6" x 4" - 7 x 21/2" strips for binding.
- From Fabric I cut - 1 x 6" strips, crosscut into 6 x 6" squares - 1 x 4" strip, crosscut into 4 x 4" squares.
QUILT TOP
Step 1 - Refer to layout diagram to arrange squares and rectangles into columns.
Step 2 - Sew together the 6" squares and 6" x 4" rectangles in column 1. Press seams in one direction and replace in the layout.
Step 3 - Sew together the 4" x 6" rectangles and 4" squares in column 2. Press seams in the opposite direction to column 1 and replace in the layout.
Step 4 - Continue across repeating Step 2 for columns 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 and Step 3 for columns 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12.
Step 5 - Sew the columns together pressing seams in one direction.
Step 6 - Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.
Step 7 - Join the 7 x 2 1/2" binding strips on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners.
Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
