  • 20cm Fabric A - Baby Platypus, Natural
  • 20cm Fabric B - Wombat & Wattle
  • 70cm Fabric C - Baby Echidna, Orange (includes binding)
  • 50cm Fabric D - Baby Wallaby & Gum Blossom
  • 50cm Fabric E - Baby Animals, Ivory
  • 50cm Fabric F - Baby Koala & Wattle
  • 50cm Fabric G - Baby Animals, Mint
  • 1.2m Fabric of choice for backing
  • 1.2m x 1.2m Cotton/bamboo batting
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Quilting pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Hand needle
  • Sewing machine with ¼" foot & walking foot

All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed.

¼" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.

INSTRUCTIONS

CUTTING
All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

  • From Fabric A cut 1 x 4½" strip, crosscut into 1 x 4½" square, cut 1 x 2½" strip crosscut into 4 x 2½" squares and 4 rectangles 4½" x 2½".
  • From Fabric B cut 1 x 2½" strip, crosscut into 8 x 2½" squares.
  • From Fabric C cut 1 x 4½" strip, crosscut into 4 rectangles 4½" x 8½"; 1 x 9⅜" square cut twice on the diagonal to make 4 quarter-square triangles. Cut 5 x 2½" strips for binding.
  • From Fabric D cut 1 x 4½" strip, crosscut into 4 rectangles 4½" x 8½"; 1 x 9⅜" square cut twice on the diagonal to make 4 quarter-square triangles.
  • From Fabric E cut 2 x 4½" strips, crosscut into 8 rectangles 4½" x 8½"; 1 x 8⅞" strip, crosscut into 2 x 8⅞" squares, then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 4 half-square triangles.
  • From Fabric F cut 4 x 4½" strips, crosscut strips into 8 x 4½" squares, 4 rectangles 4½" x 12½" and 4 rectangles 4½" x 8½".
  • From Fabric G cut 4 x 4½" strips for border.

BLOCKS
Step 1 - Centre Block Fabric A - 1 x 4½" square, 4 x 2½" squares and 4 rectangles 4½" x 2½"; Fabric B - 8 x 2½" squares.

Step 2 - Draw a diagonal line across the 8 x 2½" Fabric B squares. Place one square on the right-hand end of a 4½" x 2½" Fabric A rectangle as in the diagram and sew along the line.

Step 3 - Trim off corner with a ¼" seam allowance. Press triangle outwards, as in diagram. Press seams in one direction. Repeat at the left-hand end to complete one flying geese unit. Repeat to make total of 4 flying geese units.

Step 4 - Using 1 x 4½" Fabric A square, 4 x 2½" Fabric A squares and the 4 units layout the block in 3 rows as shown. Sew rows together pressing seams towards squares. Sew rows together matching seams.

Unit 1, make 4
Step 5 - For each unit - 4½" x 8½" Fabric C rectangle, 4½" x 8½" Fabric D rectangle, two 4½" x 8½" Fabric E rectangles, two 4½" Fabric F squares.

Step 6 - With a 4½" x 8½" Fabric C rectangle horizontally and right side up, place a 4½" x 8½" Fabric E rectangle face down vertically at the right-hand end with corners aligned. Mark the point on the side of the Fabric E rectangle at the top of the Fabric C rectangle and draw a diagonal line from that point down to the bottom corner as in diagram.

Step 7 - Pin rectangles and sew together along the line. Trim off corner with a ¼" seam allowance. Press rectangle outwards, as in diagram. Press seams in one direction.

Step 8 - Draw a diagonal line across a 4½" Fabric F square and place square on the Fabric E end of Step 7 as in diagram. Pin and sew together along the line. Trim off corner with a ¼" seam allowance. Press triangle outwards, as in diagram. Press seams in one direction.

Step 9 - With a 4½" x 8½" Fabric D rectangle horizontally and right side up, place a 4½" x 8½" Fabric E rectangle face down vertically at the right-hand end with corners aligned. Mark the point on the side of the Fabric E rectangle at the bottom of the Fabric C rectangle and draw a diagonal line from that point up to the top corner as in diagram.

Step 10 - Pin rectangles and sew together along the line. Trim off corner with a ¼" seam allowance. Press rectangle outwards, as in diagram. Press seams in one direction.

Step 11 - Draw a diagonal line across a 4½" Fabric F square and place square on the Fabric E end of Step 10 as in diagram. Pin and sew together along the line. Trim off corner with a ¼" seam allowance. Press triangle outwards, as in diagram. Press seams in one direction.

Step 12 - Pin Steps 8 and 11 together matching seams and sew together as in diagram to complete Unit 1.

Step 13 - Repeat Steps 5-12 to make a total of 4 x Unit 1.

Unit 2, make 4
Step 14 - For each unit - 1 x Fabric C quarter-square triangle, 1 x Fabric D quarter-square triangle, 1 x Fabric E half-square triangle.

Step 15 - Pin and sew Fabric C & D quarter-square triangles together as in diagram.

Step 16 - Pin and sew Fabric E half-square triangle to Step 15 as in diagram to complete Unit 2. Press seam towards Fabric E.

Step 17 - Repeat Steps 14-16 to make a total of 4 x Unit 2.

Step 18 - Sew a 4½" x 8½" Fabric F strip to the side of each Unit 2 as in diagram. Press seam towards strip.

Step 19 - Then sew a 4½" x 12½" Fabric F strip to the top/bottom of each Unit 2 as as in diagram. Press seam towards strip.

QUILT TOP
Step 20 - Lay out the centre block and Units 1 and 2 as in diagram.

Step 21 - Sew the blocks together in each row matching seams. Press seams in one direction alternating direction in each row.

Step 22 - Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction.

Step 23 - Border - sew one 4½" Fabric G border strip to each side of the quilt top. Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric. Sew remaining strips to the top and bottom of

Step 24 - Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 25 - Join the 5 x 2½" binding strips together on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
