HOW TO MAKE A CROCHET SQUARE

How To Make A Crochet Square Project

Level: Beginner

What you'll need:

Finished Size

25 x 25 cm square (applies to ANY Square pattern).

Tension

Granny Squares: Not crucial for this square. Work to Finished Size as required.

V-Stitch Crochet Squares: 7 V-sts x 10 rows to 10 cm.

Instructions

Optional - Finished size of Wrap is approx. 100 cm x 175 cm by joining 28 Squares (4 squares x 7 squares).




Granny Square (Afghan) Motif

Using size 4 mm hook, make 4ch, join with a slst to form a ring.

1st Rnd - 5ch (count as 1tr & 2ch-sp), *3tr in ring, 2ch*, rep from *to* twice more, 2tr in ring, slst in 3rd ch of 5ch at beg, slst in this 2ch-sp corner.

2nd Rnd - 5ch (count as 1tr & 2ch-sp), 3tr in same sp, *1ch, (3tr, 2ch, 3tr in next 2ch-sp)*, rep from *to* twice more, 1ch, 2tr in same sp at beg of rnd, slst in 3rd ch of 5ch at beg, slst in this 2ch-sp corner.

3rd Rnd - 5ch (count as 1tr & 2ch-sp), 3tr in same sp, *1ch, 3tr in next 1ch-sp, 1ch, (3tr, 2ch, 3tr) in next 2ch-sp*, rep from *to* twice more, 1ch, 2tr in 2ch-sp at beg of rnd, slst in 3rd ch of 5ch at beg of rnd, slst in this 2ch-sp.

4th Rnd - 5ch (count as 1tr & 2ch-sp), 3tr in same sp, *(1ch, 3tr in next 1ch-sp) twice, 1ch, (3tr, 2ch, 3tr) in next 2ch-sp*, rep from *to* twice more, 1ch, 2tr in 2ch-sp at beg of rnd, slst in 3rd ch of 5ch at beg of rnd, slst in this 2ch-sp.

Continue in this manner working an extra (3tr, 1ch) on each side of square between corners on every additional Rnd to the finished size of 25 cm x 25 cm, fasten off OR leave a long tail for sewing squares together.


V-Stitch Crochet Motif

Using 4 mm hook, make 52ch, turn.

1st Row - miss 3ch (count as 1tr), *2tr in next ch, miss 2ch*, rep from *to* until 1ch rem, 1tr in last ch, turn.

2nd Row - 3ch (count as 1tr), *2tr in space between 2tr of previous row*, rep from *to* until last 2tr have been worked, 1tr in 3rd ch of prev row, turn.

2nd Row forms patt.

Rep 2nd Row 23 times more (or as required), fasten off OR leaving long tail if sewing squares together.


Finishing Squares Only

DO NOT PRESS. Using yarn needle, sew in ends securely towards centre.


Completing Wrap

DO NOT PRESS. Using yarn needle and yarn tails, with RS facing, holding two squares side-by-side, join using a flat seam (or any preferred joining technique). Wraps are made up of 28 Squares (4 x 7) as per diagram. Each Square should be joined alternately vertical/horizontal to the adjoining Square to give stability. Weave in and hide all ends into centre of Squares.
