STRIPED CANVAS BAGS

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - First cut the panels as per required size below.

• Cut 1 panel of Striped cotton canvas fabric of 52cm wide x 120cm high with the stripes running vertical down the bag. This long piece will be the main piece for the bag.
• Cut 2 pieces of White Cotton Tape (45 mm) about 150cm for straps.

Step 2 - Fold the short edges of the striped cotton canvas fabric down by 2.5cm and then fold over again 2.5cm and pin in place. Press with an iron. Then use a straight stitch to sew in place, these edges will become the opening of the bag.

Step 3 - Lay the main body of the bag out flat with right sides facing up. Pin the white cotton tape onto the fabric to create the straps. Space it evenly so both sides have equal length in the loop at the top of the bag. Over lap the ends of the straps at the base of the bag. Once pinned in place, stitch the straps down onto the fabric using a straight stitch roughly 0.5cm in from the edge of the tape.

Step 4- Fold the main body of the bag in half and pin along both sides with right sides facing together, ensure to leave the top hemmed edges open. Sew a 1cm seam along each side.

Step 5- To make the square corners of the bag, flatten the base of the bag out and measure in 5cm from the corner tip and pin through both layers of fabric. Sew a straight line across the corner, your stitch line should follow and go through the 5cm marked position. This will create a triangle shape as shown. The sewn line should be 10cm in length. Repeat on the other side. This will create a 10cm base/gusset to your bag.

Step 6- Once both corners have been sewn, turn bag inside out and use hands to push out the corners neatly. If you want, you can stitch the triangle shapes down to the base of the bag or you can cut the excess fabric off and over lock or zig zag the seam allowance. Your bag is now ready for use!
