BOWL COZY

Bowl Cozy Project

Level: Easy

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • Two fat quarters of cotton fabric for the outer layer
  • 5m of cotton batting (we recommend Wrap-N-Zap if using in the microwave)
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • 100% cotton thread in a matching colour
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Template

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Fold each fat quarter of fabric into quarters and lay the template on top, matching up the bottom corners. Cut out 2 x fabric and 2 x wadding pieces for each cozy.
  2. Lay one fat quarter of fabric face down on the table and place the batting on top on the wrong side. Mark and stitch diagonally across the batting side in an x as shown. Do the same on the other fat quarter of fabric and batting. A walking foot can be a big help in sewing batting so it doesn't catch or wrinkle.
  3. Fold each fabric square in half diagonally, with the right sides facing inwards. Along each of the triangle dart markings, fold the fabric right sides together and sew together using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Remember to reverse stitch at each end to secure the seam. Once you've sewn along all the dart markings, press the seams open to create a flat surface on the inside of the cozy.
  4. Nest one bowl cozy into the other, right sides together. Line them up so that the corners match and the sides meet. Sew all around the edge with a 1/2 inch (12mm) seam allowance, leaving an opening on one side of about 2 inches (5cm) for turning the bowl cozy through to the right side.
  5. On the rounded edges of the bowl cozy, make small clips at the corners so that they turn neatly. Then, turn the bowl cozy right side out through the gap and press it with an iron. Press the edges in at the gap and then top stitch all around the edge of the bowl cozy to close the gap and give a neat finish.
