JO SONJA PARISIAN INTERIOR PAINTING

INSTRUCTIONS

Enjoy the creation of a whimsical Parisian-style painting using the matt, fluid and brightly pigmented Jo Sonja acrylic paints. This project encourages the use of thick, loose and expressive applications of paint.

In true impressionistic fashion, each artwork will be unique and the following steps are a guide rather than an exact set of steps/rules to follow. For best results use a variety of reference images of paintings by Henri Matisse.

Read all instructions before starting, and refer to the downloadable project sheet for full details.

Step 1 - Pick your subject and create multiple drawings using curved, deliberate and minimal lines exploring composition on paper before starting on canvas. Keep in mind that this is a romantic impression of shape and space that avoids clear, realistic outlines.

Once you are happy with your composition it's time to transfer it to the canvas. Using Jo Sonja Burnt Umber and a small round brush, draw on the outline. Be sure to use a heavily loaded brush and create varied lines with mixed brush pressure.

Step 2 - Using a medium sized flat brush, paint in all the sections of the painting in single flat colours. Use the following colour reference chart to help with mixing each paint. Cut in around the dark lines in a loose fashion keeps gaps and pieces of the white canvas exposed in some areas.

Step 3 - Using the small round brush add patterns to the areas of the painting that you would like to draw attention to/ appear close to the viewer.

Apply dots to the interior wall, squiggles to the rug and accents on the figure using Jo Sonja Amethyst. Paint on vertical lines on the curtains and repetitive arrow pattern on the floor with a mix of Unbleached titanium and Pthalo blue.
