What Are Outdoor Blinds?

Outdoor blinds are external blinds designed to be installed outside your windows or around open spaces like patios, balconies, verandahs, and outdoor entertaining areas. They protect your living space from weather while helping you control light, airflow, and privacy.

They are commonly used in alfresco and outdoor living areas where comfort matters. Options like cafe blinds and patio blinds allow you to enclose an outdoor area without blocking your view, while still improving airflow.

What are the Benefits of Outdoor Blinds?

The benefits of outdoor blinds go beyond simple sun protection. They help turn your outdoor space into a functional living area that you'll love all year round.

Enjoy:

• Protection from harmful UV rays with strong UV protection and sunscreen fabrics
• Better airflow while shielding against wind and rain
• Added privacy for outdoor and alfresco areas
• Protection for furniture from harsh weather
• Light filtering or blockout options, depending on your needs
• Improved comfort across your indoor and outdoor living spaces

Outdoor blinds also help reduce glare and limit exposure to harmful UV rays, making them a smart addition for comfort and safety.

The Best Outdoor Blinds for Aussie Conditions

Choosing the right outdoor blinds in Australia depends on your space and weather conditions. Spotlight offers a range designed for durability and performance.

Popular options include:

• PVC outdoor blinds that are weatherproof and ideal for rain protection
• Outdoor roller blinds that are compact, retractable, and easy to use
• Café blinds that suit outdoor entertaining areas and improve airflow
• Patio blinds designed for alfresco and verandah spaces
• Outdoor shades with light filtering or sunscreen fabrics
• Blockout blinds for privacy and stronger coverage
• Awnings that extend shade over your outdoor space

For decks, balconies, pool areas, and outdoor patios, outdoor roller blinds and sunscreen options work well. For exposed areas, PVC blinds provide stronger protection.

How to Choose Outdoor Blinds That Suit Your Space

Not all exterior blinds are suitable for every outdoor living space.

When shopping for outdoor blinds, consider the size of your outdoor area. Outdoor blinds with bulky mechanisms may make smaller areas feel closed in. For these spaces, consider our range of sleek and compact outdoor roller blinds. For a spacious alfresco area, think about Spotlight's clear patio blinds that allow you to enjoy the view while protecting your space from pesky insects and wild weather.

You should also consider the level of light filtering you need. Sunscreen fabrics reduce glare and UV rays without blocking out the view entirely, while blockout options keep your living area cooler.

Take care with measuring too, making sure to accurately measure your space to get the fit just right. Decide on an inside or outside mount first, then measure with enough overlap to fully cover the opening.

When to Go with Motorised Outdoor Blinds

Motorised blinds are an automated type of outdoor blind that offers real convenience in your external window coverings. These blinds are incredibly functional and save you time managing your blind mechanisms.

Motorised outdoor blinds are often controlled by a remote control, wall switch or phone app. They're ideal for those wanting to limit visible hardware, bringing a cleaner look to their outdoor area. They also offer great accessibility, perfect for homeowners who struggle with blind cords or have blinds in hard-to-reach spots.

For added convenience, Spotlight also offers custom-made motorised blinds, including a free measure and free quote, with professional installation included.

Common Mistakes People Make with Outdoor Blinds

One of the biggest mistakes people make with outdoor blinds is recording inaccurate measurements. Measuring accurately is incredibly important when shopping for outdoor blinds.

If measuring for an outdoor area such as a deck or verandah, first decide on an inside or outside mount. If covering your windows from the outside, measure with enough overlap in both height and width to fully cover the opening. Make sure to read our buying guide on how to measure your windows for step-by-step instructions.

Also consider the material. Fabric or mesh blinds won't hold up as well in heavy rain. For weatherproof performance year round, PVC outdoor blinds are the more durable choice.

How Do You Install Outdoor Blinds?

If you want to DIY the installation, you will need the following in addition to the screws, brackets, and bracket covers often included in your outdoor blinds kit:

• measuring tape
• drill
• pencil
• step ladder

Once you have all these, you can start installing your outdoor blinds. Here's how:

1. Attach the brackets to the window frame and drill into place.
2. Insert the ball chain system and end plug into either end of the roller blind tube.
3. Pop the roller blind into the brackets and snap them into place.
4. Secure the cord to the window frame, safely out of reach of small children.
