What Are Curtain Rings and How Do They Work?

Curtain rod rings are the small circular hoops that your curtains hang from. These accessories allow your curtain to slide smoothly across a rod or along a track, while offering a sleek and smooth finish. At Spotlight, you can shop from a variety of different curtain ring types to suit different curtain header styles. Explore the full range to discover the best curtain rings for your curtains right here at Spotlight.

Which Type of Curtain Ring Do You Actually Need?

At Spotlight, you'll come across a few different types of curtain rings, including:

  • Rings with clips - Ideal for lightweight curtains. If you're looking to display linen or panel curtains, then rings with clips are a great option. Although they are designed to be installed on a curtain track, S-Fold curtains may be installed with rings with clips, however, this may affect the drape.
  • Rings with hooks - Suitable for heavier drapes and lined curtains, rings with hooks are great for installing blockout curtains.
  • Rings with eyelets - As the name suggests, these curtain rings feature little eyelets that can be used for holding hooks of pencil pleat and pinch pleat curtains.

What Size Curtain Rings Do You Need for Your Rod?

The inside diameter of the ring needs to be at least 12mm larger than the rod diameter so the rings can slide freely. For example, a 25mm rod needs rings with at least a 38mm inside diameter. Rings that are too tight will bind on the rod, and rings that are too large look out of proportion. Spotlight stocks curtain rings to suit common rod sizes, including 16mm and 25mm rods.

How Many Curtain Rings Do You Need Per Panel?

We recommend placing a curtain ring every 10 to 20 centimetres along the top of the panel as a general rule. For pinch pleat curtains, it's recommended to place one ring per pleat, plus one at each end. For flat panel curtains, space rings every 10 to 15cm for a clean fold, however, you can also opt for a wider spacing to create more of a draped wave look. For heavier or lined curtains, go closer together to prevent sagging. And remember, it's always a better idea to have a few extra rings than be short of those that you need, so always shop for a few extra curtain rings just in case.

Which Material Works Best?

At Spotlight, you can shop a range of different materials such as metal rings, wood, and plastic. The best curtain rod ring material for you will depend on your needs. Do you need strong curtain rings to hold up a heavy curtain? Go for metal or thick plastic curtain rings. Do you want rings that will slide silently across the curtain rod? Stick to wood or plastic rings. Do you want rings that look as good as your curtains? Metal or timber is your best bet. Remember, matching your materials in terms of your curtain rod and curtain rods helps to create a cohesive look in any room.

Match Your Rings to Your Room Style

With a range of finishes available, you'll be sure to find the perfect curtain rings to match your home decor style. Shop from a selection of black, white, brushed nickel, chrome, brass, antique brass and natural timber. Black and matte finishes suit contemporary rooms, brass and timber tones suit warm, earthy interiors, chrome and nickel work well in modern and coastal spaces.

Coordinating rings with rods, brackets and finials from the same range gives a polished result. Shop in store or online at Spotlight to discover a range of matching curtain rods, finials and other accessories.

How to Attach Curtain Rings to Your Curtains

The process of attaching your curtain rings will vary depending on the type of your curtain rings. For rings with clips, clip onto the fabric at even intervals across the top of the panel, starting from each end and working inwards. For rings with hooks, insert the drapery hook into the back of the curtain header tape, then hang onto the ring. For plain rings with pins, insert the pin through the back of the curtain just below the top edge so the pin eye is hidden, then hang the pin onto the ring loop. Slide all rings onto the rod before hanging the curtain.

How to Care for Your Curtain Rings

For metal rings such as brass, steel and nickel, and wooden rings, we recommend cleaning with a dry cloth to remove any dust buildup, which can affect your ring's ability to glide properly. A dry cloth can also be used between the ring and the rod to reduce friction and help wooden rings glide more easily.
