Everything You Need to Make an Outdoor Cushion
- 1 Metre of Fabric: For an outdoor cushion, make sure to choose fabric that can withstand the elements such as rain or exposure to sunlight. Shop our selection of outdoor fabric for a range of stylish and durable fabrics.
- Square Cushion Insert (46cm x 46cm): Essential when making a DIY cushion at home, a cushion insert will give your outdoor cushion that plump look, bringing comfort to your creation. For this outdoor cushion project, you'll need one size 18 (46cm x 46cm) cushion insert.
- Sewing Machine: Making a world of sewing projects possible, sewing machines from trusted brands such as Singer help speed up your sewing process.
- Tape Measure: Recording accurate measurements is integral to making a cushion. Use a measuring tape such as the Birch Tape Measure to record your measurements.
- Sewing thread: Sewing thread is essential for sewing projects as it connects your pieces of fabric together. For projects such as an outdoor cushion, we recommend using a stronger thread such as the Gutermann Sew-All rPET White Thread or Mettler Xtreme Pro Thread that is abrasion and tear-resistant.
- Pins: You'll often need to secure your fabric in place before sewing your creation together. Pins help to prevent fabric from shifting when sewing and allow for precision when matching any seams and patterns together.
- Scissors: You'll need to cut your pieces of fabric before sewing your cushion cover. Spotlight is home to a great range of scissors and cutting tools, including brands such as Fiskars, for all your sewing project needs.
- Seam ripper: A good tool to have on hand in the case of any errors, a seam ripper allows you to undo any incorrect stitching.
How to Make an Outdoor Cushion
Learn how to make an outdoor cushion using one of our furnishing fabrics in 4 easy steps.
1. Cut - Prepare Your Fabric Pieces
Cut a 46 cm square from the fabric for the front, and two 33cm x 46cm rectangles for the cushion back.
2. Fold - Top Stitch The Pinned Hem
For the cushion backs, fold and pin under 1.5 cm on the long side of each rectangle and then top stitch the hem in place.
3. Pin - Position Your Pieces Into Place
With the cushion front right side up, place one hemmed back piece face down on top, aligning the top raw edges with the hemmed edge towards the centre. Pin this in place. Then place your second piece on the other end, aligning your raw edges with the seamed piece in the middle and pin in place.
4. Sew - Neaten the Seams
Sew together around all four sides using a 1 cm seam allowance. Clip the corners and overlock or zigzag the seams to neaten. Turn the cover the right side out and press flat. Place your size 18 insert into the cover with the back edges overlapping.
