How to Crochet a Coaster

For a handy tutorial on how to make a crochet coaster, follow these 6 easy steps. Learn how to hold your crochet hook, make a slip knot and make a crochet square.

1. Make - Create a Slip Knot

Firstly, make a slip knot and place it on your 4mm crochet hook. Chain 6 stitches loosely and slip stitch into 1st chain. Turn your work at the end of your chain so you can begin the 1st round. For the 1st round, chain 3 stitches. This counts as your first treble stitch. You can turn left or right, just remember to be consistent and turn the same way each time.

2. Turn - Rotate Your Work

Turn your work left or right and into the centre ring and make 2 treble stitches. Then, chain 2 stitches, 3 treble stitches, and 2 stitches again. Repeat this process twice more.

3. Slip Stitch - Making Your Stitches

Slip stitch into the top of the 1st chain of three, done at the beginning of the row. For the second row, make three chains.

4. Continue - Repeat Your Stitches

Move into the next corner space and make 2 treble stitches, then another 2 chains. Then complete another 3 treble stitches into the same corner space. In each of the remaining corners, complete another 3 treble stitches, 2 chains, and 3 more treble stitches.

At the end of the row, slip stitch into the top of the first chain of 3, done at the beginning of the row. Complete the same steps as the previous round for round 3, however note in the side spaces of the square you do not need to make any chains as you move between each space. Simply chain 3 stitches, treble crochet in the side spaces and then move into the corner space.

5. Last Round - Your Final Set Of Stitches

Make 3 treble stitches, 2 chains, then another 3 treble stitches. Keep working around until you get to your desired size. At the end of your project, slip stitch into the top of the last 3 chains you completed in your last round, yarn over and pull your loop on your hook. Cut the yarn and pull the tail through to fasten off.

6. Finish - Complete Your Coaster

Weave in the ends towards centre with your yarn needle. Weaving in the end hides the end of the yarn and keeps your coaster intact.
