What Makes Extendable Curtain Rods So Handy?

An expandable curtain rod is a long length of timber, plastic or metal that can be expanded or compacted telescopically. Our range of extendable curtain rods can be lengthened or shortened to suit the size of your window, meaning you can choose the style you want without worrying about the length.

What Length Should I Choose for an Extendable Curtain Rod?

Before shopping for your curtain rod, it's important to measure your windows, recording accurate measurements. To determine the size required of your curtain rods, measure your windows, adding around 15cm on both sides of your windows to calculate the ideal length of your curtain rods and to allow your curtains to open fully. When choosing an extendable curtain rod, check the two sizes listed, as these will refer to the sizes of each pole section. These sizes will determine how strong the pole is, and how heavy a curtain it can safely carry - larger diameters will be needed for heavy blockout or thermal curtains. At Spotlight, you'll often see a range of sizes such as 120-210 cm, 190-380 cm, however, one rod can fit several windows.

Choosing the Right Rod for Your Curtains

Expandable curtain rods can be used for hanging curtains in various styles, such as eyelet curtains, pencil pleat curtains and pinch pleat curtains, as many come with curtain rings included. An extendable curtain rod works with most types, but heavier curtains might need sturdier rods and extra curtain brackets. Spotlight offers a variety of rods suitable for both sheer curtains and heavier curtain fabrics, including blockout curtains and thermal curtains.

How Do I Install an Extendable Curtain Rod?

Expandable curtain rods are installed very similarly to other standard rods, however, differ when it's time to expand the rods to their ideal length. First, make sure to measure and secure the curtain brackets where they need to be. Remove one finial from the end of your rod. Expand to your desired length. Thread your curtains onto your curtain rod. Screw the finial back on once the curtains are on the curtain rod and place your curtain rod into position on your curtain brackets.
