Special Stitches

THROW

BASIC SQUARE (make 6 x C1, 7 x C2, 1 x C5, 1 x C6)

Using 5mm hook, make a magic ring.

1st round - Into ring, work 5ch (counts as 1tr and 2ch throughout), (3tr, 2ch) 3 times, 2tr, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg ... 12tr.

2nd round - Sl st into 2ch sp, 5ch, 2tr in same sp, * 1tr in each of next 3 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next 2 ch sp, rep from * 3 times, 1tr in each of next 3 sts, 1tr in 2ch sp, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg ... 28tr.

3rd round - Sl st into 2ch sp, 5ch, 2tr in same sp, * 1tr in each of next 7 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next 2 ch sp, rep from * 3 times, 1tr in each of next 7 sts, 1tr in 2ch sp, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg ... 44tr.

4th round - Sl st into 2ch sp, 5ch, 2tr in same sp, * 1tr in each of next 11 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next 2ch sp, rep from * 3 times, 1tr in each of next 11 sts, 1tr in 2ch sp, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg ... 60tr.

5th round - Sl st into 2ch sp, 5ch, 2tr in same sp, * 1tr in each of next 15 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next 2ch sp, rep from * 3 times, 1tr in each of next 15 sts, 1tr in 2ch sp, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg ... 76tr.

6th round - Sl st into 2ch sp, 5ch, 2tr in same sp, * 1tr in each of next 19 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next 2ch sp, rep from * 3 times, 1tr in each of next 19 sts, 1tr in 2ch sp, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg ... 92tr.

7th round - Sl st into 2ch sp, 5ch, 2tr in same sp, * 1tr in each of next 23 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next 2ch sp, rep from * 3 times, 1tr in each of next 23 sts, 1tr in 2ch sp, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg ... 108tr. Fasten off.

HALF-SQUARE (make 2 x C1, 4 x C2)

Using 5mm hook, make a magic ring.

1st row - Into ring, work 3ch (counts as 1tr throughout), 2tr, 2ch, 3tr, turn ... 6tr.

2nd - 7th rows - 3ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to last st, 3tr in last st, turn. Fasten off.

MITRED SQUARE 1

Make 3 in colour sequence as folls - 1 x C2 centre/C1 mitre, 1 x C4 centre/C2 mitre, 1 x C5 centre/C2 mitre.

Using 5mm hook and 1st colour for centre, make a magic ring.

1st round - Into ring, work 5ch (counts as 1tr and 2ch throughout), (3tr, 2ch) 3 times, 2tr, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg.

2nd round - Sl st into 2ch sp, 5ch, 2tr in same sp, * 1tr in each of next 3 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next 2 ch sp, rep from * 3 times, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 tr in 2ch sp, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg. Fasten off.

Change to 2nd colour for Mitre - 1st row - Sl st into 2ch sp, 3ch (counts as tr throughout), 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, 1tr in 2ch sp, turn.

2nd - 10th rows - 3ch, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to end. Fasten off.

MITRED SQUARE 2

Make 7 in colour sequence as folls - 5 x C7 centre/C3 mitre, 1 x C7 centre/C1 mitre, 1 x C6 centre/C2 mitre.

Using 5mm hook and 1st colour for centre, make a magic ring.

1st round - Into ring, work 5ch (counts as 1tr and 2ch throughout), (3tr, 2ch) 3 times, 2tr, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg.

2nd - 3rd rounds - Sl st into 2ch sp, 5ch, 2tr in same sp, * 1tr in each of next 3 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next 2 ch sp, rep from * 3 times, 1tr in each of next 3 sts, 1tr in 2ch sp, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg. Fasten off.

Change to 2nd colour for Mitre - 1st row - Sl st into 2ch sp, 3ch, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, 1tr in 2ch sp, turn.

2nd - 8th rows - 3ch, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to end. Fasten off.

MITRED SQUARE 3

Make 4 in colour sequence as folls - 1 x C7 centre/C1 mitre, 1 x C5 centre/C1 mitre, 1 x C3 centre, C2 mitre, 1 x C3 centre/C1 mitre

Using 5mm hook and 1st colour for Centre, make a magic ring.

1st round - Into ring, work 5ch (counts as 1tr and 2ch throughout), (3tr, 2ch) 3 times, 2tr, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg.

2nd - 4th rounds - Sl st into 2ch sp, 5ch, 2tr in same sp, * 1tr in each of next 3 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next 2ch sp, rep from * 3 times, 1tr in each of next 3 sts, 1tr in 2ch sp, sl st into 3rd of 5ch at beg. Fasten off.

Change to 2nd colour for Mitre - 1st row - Sl st into 2ch sp, 3ch, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, 1tr in 2ch sp, turn.

2nd - 6th rows - 3ch, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to end. Fasten off.

MITRED SQUARE 4

Make 2 in colour sequence as folls - 1 x C4 centre/C1 mitre, 1 x C5 centre/C1 mitre

Using 5mm hook and 1st colour for Centre, make a magic ring.

Change to 2nd colour for Mitre - 1st row - Sl st into 2ch sp, 3ch, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, 1tr in 2ch sp, turn.

2nd row - 3ch, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to end. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY PART 1

Using a flat seam, sew the C1 squares, half-squares and mitred squares as shown in the diagram.

ZIGZAG SECTION 1 (worked on the left side of Assembly Part 1)

Using 5mm hook and C1, attach yarn to 2ch sp on top left of top square.

1st row - Beg tr3 tog, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, * 1tr in each tr to last 2 sts, tr2 tog, miss all 2ch sps of joined squares, tr2 tog, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, rep from * 3 times, 1tr in each st to last 2 sts before next 2ch sp, tr2 tog, miss 2ch sps and first tr of next square, 1tr in each st to next 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to last 3 sts, tr3 tog. Fasten off.

ZIGZAG SECTION 2 (worked on the right side of Assembly Part 1)

Using 5mm hook and C6, attach yarn to 3rd of 3ch on bottom right of bottom half-square.

1st row - 3ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each st to last 2 sts before 2ch sp, * tr2 tog, miss all 2ch sps of joined squares, tr2 tog, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to last 2 sts before 2ch sp, rep from * twice, tr2 tog, miss 2ch sps and first tr of next square, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to last 2 sts before 2ch sp, * tr2 tog, miss all 2ch sps, tr2 tog, 1tr in each st to last st, 3tr in last st.

2nd - 4th rows - 3ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each st to last 3 sts on this side of trough, * tr2 tog, miss last st on this side of trough and first st of opposite side of trough, tr2 tog, 1tr in each st to next 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to last 3 sts on this side of trough, rep from * to last trough, tr2 tog, miss last st on this side of trough and first st of opposite side of trough, tr2 tog, 1tr in each st to last st, 3tr in last st. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY PART 2

Sew the 5 x C7 centre/C3 mitre squares to work as shown in the diagram.

ZIGZAG SECTION 3 (worked on right side of Assembly Part 2)

Using 5mm hook and C1, attach yarn to bottom point of bottom mitred square of Assembly Part 2.

1st row - Make a beg tr3 tog by working 2ch and tr2 tog around first and second trs of mitre, 1tr around same st, 2tr around each tr to change of colour, 1tr in 2ch sp of square centre, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, * 1tr in each st of square centre, 1tr in 2ch sp, 2tr around each tr of mitre to 2nd last tr, 1tr around next tr, tr2 tog around same and next tr, tr2 tog around first and second tr's of next mitre, 1tr around same st, 2tr around each tr to change of colour, 1tr in 2ch sp of square centre, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, rep from * once more, 1 tr in each st of square centre, 1tr in 2ch sp, 2tr around each tr of mitre to 2nd last tr, 1tr around next tr, tr2 tog around same and next tr, miss first tr of next square, tr2 tog, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to last 2 sts, tr 2 tog, miss last tr, tr 2 tog around 1st tr and 2nd tr of mitre, 1tr around same st, 2tr around each tr to change of colour, 1tr in 2ch sp of square centre, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, *1 tr in each st of square centre, 1tr in 2ch sp, 2tr around each tr of mitre to 2nd last tr, 1tr around 2nd last tr, tr3 tog around same tr, next tr and top of last tr.

2nd row - Beg tr3 tog, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to last 3 sts on this side of trough, * tr 2 tog, miss last st on this side of trough and first st of opposite side of trough, tr2 tog, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to last 3 sts on this side of trough, rep from * to last 3 sts, tr3 tog.

3rd row - Repeat 2nd row.

Change to C2 - 4th - 7th rows - Rep 2nd row.

Change to C5 - 8th - 10th rows - Rep 2nd row.

Change to C4 - 11th - 16th rows - Rep 2nd row.

Change to C3 - 17th - 20th rows - Rep 2nd row. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY PART 3

Using a flat seam, sew the C2 squares, half-squares and mitred squares, plus C5 square to work as shown in the diagram.

ZIGZAG SECTION 4 (worked on right side of Assembly Part 3)

Using 5mm hook and C2, work foundation row in same manner as ZigZag Section 2, working along half-squares, squares and mitred squares in the same way as previously described.

2nd - 3rd rows - 3ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each st to last 3 sts on this side of trough, * tr2 tog, miss last st on this side of trough and first st of opposite side of trough, tr2 tog, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to last 3 sts on this side of trough, rep from * to last trough, tr2 tog, miss last st on this side of trough and first st of opposite side of trough, tr2 tog, 1tr in each st to last st, 3tr in last st.

Change to C7 - 4th - 7th rows - Rep 2nd row.

Change to C1 - 8th - 11th rows - Rep 2nd row. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY PART 4

Using flat seam, sew rem C1 squares and C6 square to work as shown in the diagram.

ZIGZAG SECTION 5 (worked on right side of Assembly Part 4)

Using 5mm hook and C4, work foundation row in same manner as ZigZag Section 3, working along half-squares, squares and mitred squares in the same way as previously described.

2nd - 4th rows - Beg tr3 tog, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to last 3 sts on this side of trough, * tr2 tog, miss last st on this side of trough and first st of opposite side of trough, tr2 tog, 1tr in each st to 2ch sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in 2ch sp, 1tr in each st to last 3 sts on this side of trough, rep from * to last 3 sts, tr3 tog.

Change to C5 - 5th - 8th rows - Rep 2nd row.

Change to C3 - 9th - 14th rows - Rep 2nd row. Fasten off.
