Quilt Sewing

Note: Sew using a 1/4" seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise indicated. Press seams towards the darker fabric, unless otherwise indicated. The arrows in the figures represent the fabric print direction. Pay attention to the fabric and unit orientations when assembling the various components.

  1. Sew (1) 1¾" x 5 1/2" Fabric G strip to each side of (1) 5 1/2" Fabric D square. Sew (1) 1¾" x 8" Fabric G strip to the top and bottom of the Fabric D square to make (1) Unit 1 square (Fig. 1). Trim the unit to measure 7" x 7". Repeat to make an additional (14) Unit 1 squares.
  2. Sew (1) 1¾" x 5 1/2" Fabric F strip to each side of (1) 5 1/2" Fabric D square. Sew (1) 1¾" x 8" Fabric F strip to the top and bottom of the Fabric D square to make (1) Unit 2 square (Fig. 2). Trim the unit to measure 7" x 7". Repeat to make an additional (13) Unit 2 squares.
  3. Sew (1) 1 1/4" x 5 1/2" Fabric F strip to the top and bottom of (1) 5 1/2" Fabric B square. Sew (1) 1 1/4" x 7" Fabric F strip to each side of the Fabric B square to make (1) 7" Unit 3 square (Fig. 3). Repeat to make a second Unit 3 square.
  4. Sew (1) 1 1/4" x 7" Fabric F strip to each side of (1) Unit 1 square. Sew (1) 1 1/4" x 8 1/2" Fabric F strip to the top and bottom of the Unit 1 square to make (1) 8 1/2" Block One square (Fig. 4). Repeat to make an additional (14) Block One squares.
  5. Sew (1) 1 1/4" x 7" Fabric G strip to the top and bottom of (1) Unit 2 square. Sew (1) 1 1/4" x 8 1/2" Fabric G strip to each side of the Unit 2 square to make (1) 8 1/2" Block Two square (Fig. 5). Repeat to make an additional (12) Block Two squares.
  6. Sew (1) 1 1/4" x 7" Fabric G strip to the top and bottom of (1) Unit 3 square. Sew (1) 1 1/4" x 8 1/2" Fabric G strip to each side of the Unit 3 square to make (1) 8 1/2" Block Three square (Fig. 6). Repeat to make a second Block Two square.
  7. Sew together (3) Block One squares and (2) Block Two square, alternating them from left to right, to make Row One (Fig. 7). Repeat to make Row Three and Row Five.
  8. Sew together (3) Block Two squares and (2) Block One squares, alternating them from left to right, to make Row Two (Fig. 7). Repeat to make Row Four.
  9. Sew together (1) Block Three square, (1) Block One square, (1) Block Two square, (1) Block One square and (1) Block Three square, in that order from left to right, to make Row Six (Fig. 7).
  10. Sew together the (6) pieced Rows, lengthwise and in numerical order from top to bottom, to make the 40 1/2" x 48 1/2" Quilt Centre (Fig. 7).

Quilt Top Assembly

Follow the Quilt Layout (Page 7) while assembling the quilt top.

  1. Sew (1) 2" x 48 1/2" Fabric E strip to each side of the Quilt Centre. Sew (1) 2" x 43 1/2" Fabric E strip to the top and bottom of the Quilt Centre.
  2. Sew (1) 4 1/2" x 51 1/2" Fabric A strip to each side of the Quilt Centre. Sew (1) 4 1/2" x 51 1/2" Fabric A strip to the top and bottom of the Quilt Centre to complete the quilt top which should measure 51 1/2" x 59 1/2".

Layering, Quilting and Finishing

  1. Layer the backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top of the quilt.

Binding

  1. Sew together (6) 2 1/2" x WOF Fabric C binding strips end to end with diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together.
  2. Leaving an 8" tail of binding and beginning along an edge of the quilt top, match raw edges of the binding to the raw edges of the quilt top. Sew the binding to the outside edge around all four sides and miter corners. Stop sewing approximately 12" from where you started and backstitch.
  3. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along the quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back onto themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together, right sides matching. Trim seam to 1/4" and press seam open. Finish sewing the binding to the quilt top.
  4. Turn the binding over the raw edge to the back of the quilt and hand or machine stitch in place.

Pillowcase Sewing

Note: Sew using a 1/4" seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise indicated. Press seams towards the darker fabric, unless otherwise indicated. Pay attention to the unit orientations when assembling the various components.

  1. Fold (1) 1 1/4" x 40" Fabric C strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and press.
  2. Place the folded Fabric C strip along the long side of (1) 25 1/2" x 40" Fabric B strip, aligning the raw edges and pin in place to make the Unit 4 rectangle (Fig. 8).
  3. Fold the 10 1/2" x 40" Fabric A strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and press.
  4. Place the Fabric A strip along the long side of the Unit 4 rectangle, aligning the raw edges and pin in place to make the Unit 5 rectangle (Fig. 9). Make sure the right side of the Fabric B rectangle is facing up.
  5. Stitch across the top of the layered fabrics using 1/4" seam allowance to make the Unit 6 rectangle (Fig. 10).
  6. Flip up the Fabric A strip and press.
  7. Fold the Unit 6 rectangle in half widthwise, aligning the raw edges of the Fabric B, Fabric A and Fabric C pieces. Pin in place. Stitch down the long side and across the bottom of the folded unit to make the Unit 7 rectangle (Fig. 11).
  8. Turn the Unit 7 rectangle right side out and press to make Pillowcase One (Fig. 12).
