Sewing

Sew using a 1/4" seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise indicated. Always press towards darker fabric while assembling, unless otherwise noted by the arrows.

Block Assembly

  1. Set aside (1) hexagon each of Fabrics A, B, C, E, F, G, I, J, K, L, M and N for a total of (12) hexagons to be used in step 4 as half hexagons at the ends of alternate rows.
  2. Place (1) Fabric D Triangle on the upper left side of (1) Fabric A hexagon, right sides together (Fig. 1). The tips of the triangle will overhang the hexagon by a 1/4". Sew the pieces together. Flip open the triangle and press. Repeat to sew a Fabric D Triangle to the lower right side of the Fabric A hexagon (Fig. 2).
  3. Repeat Step 2 to make (111) blocks total.
  4. For the 12 remaining hexagons that will be on the ends of rows with half hexagons, sew a top left triangle to Fabrics F, G, I, K, L and N. Sew a bottom right triangle to the remaining 6 hexagons.

Quilt Top Assembly

Follow the Quilt Layout on page 5 while assembling the quilt top.

  1. Arrange the assorted Blocks into rows following the colour placement in the quilt image on cover. There will be (7) rows of (9) blocks each, alternating with (6) rows of (10) blocks each.
  2. Add an additional Fabric D Triangle to each end of the rows with (9) hexagons to fill in the bottom left and top right sides. Trim the excess triangle fabric to 1/4" from the hexagon point (Fig. 3).
  3. Mark the centre of each row. Aligning the centre marks and, following the Quilt Layout, sew the rows together. Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 will extend past rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13. Trim the even rows to match the odd rows to make the quilt top to measure approximately 63 1/2" x 79".
  4. Sew (1) 2 1/2" x 79" Fabric D strip to each side of the quilt top. Sew (1) 2 1/2" x 67 1/2" Fabric D strip to the top and to the bottom of the quilt top.

Finishing

  1. Sew together the (9) 2 1/2" x WOF Fabric L binding strips end to end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together.
  2. Layer the backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Sew binding to front of quilt, mitering corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to 1/4" (0.64cm) and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt.
  3. Turn the binding to the back of the quilt and hand or machine stitch in place.
