Cutting
Fabric A, cut:
Fussy cut (8) 9 1/2" squares, each centred on a block
Fabric B, cut:
(3) 2" x WOF strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut (2) 2" x 51 1/2" strips
(3) 2" x WOF strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut (2) 2" x 48 1/2" strips
(2) 2 1/2" x WOF strips, subcut (32) 2 1/2" squares
(6) 2 1/2" x WOF strips, subcut (96) 2 1/2" squares
Fabric C, cut:
(8) 2" x WOF strips, subcut (32) 2" x 9 1/2" strips
Fabric D, cut:
(2) 2" x WOF strips, subcut (32) 2" squares
(4) 2 1/2" x WOF strips, subcut (64) 2 1/2" squares
(7) 2 1/2" x WOF strips for the binding
Fabric E, cut:
(1) 8 1/2" x WOF strip, subcut (4) 8 1/2" squares
Fabric F, cut:
(1) 8 1/2" x WOF strip, subcut (4) 8 1/2" squares
Fabric G, cut:
(8) 2 1/2" x WOF strips, subcut (64) 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips
Fabric H, cut:
(2) 5 1/2" x 51 1/2" Length of Fabric (LOF) strips
From the remaining fabric, cut (5) 5 1/2" x WOF strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut (2) 5 1/2" x 61 1/2" strips
Block Assembly
Note: The arrows in figures represent the fabric print direction. Pay attention to the fabric and unit orientations when assembling the various components. Use a 1/4" seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise noted.
- Sew together (1) 2" Fabric D square, (1) 2" x 9 1/2" Fabric C strip and (1) 2" Fabric D square, in that order from left to right, to make the top row (Fig. 1).
- Sew (1) 2" x 9 1/2" Fabric C strip to each side of (1) 9 1/2" Fabric A square to make the middle row (Fig. 1).
- Sew together (1) 2" Fabric D square, (1) 2" x 9 1/2" Fabric C strip and (1) 2" Fabric D square, in that order from left to right, to make the bottom row (Fig. 1).
- Sew the (3) rows from Steps 1-3 together lengthwise to make (1) 12 1/2" Block One square (Fig. 1).
- Repeat Steps 1-4 to make (8) Block One squares total.
- Place (1) 2 1/2" Fabric B square on the top left corner of (1) 8 1/2" Fabric E square, right sides together (Fig. 2). Sew across the diagonal of the smaller square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner (Fig. 2). Flip open the triangle formed and press. Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle 1/4" away from the sewn seam (Fig. 3).
- Follow Figure 4 for the seam direction to add a 2 1/2" Fabric B square to each of the remaining corners of the 8 1/2" Fabric E square to make (1) Unit 1 square.
- Repeat Steps 6-7 to make (4) Unit 1 squares with Fabric E (Fig. 5a) and (4) Unit 1 squares with Fabric F (Fig. 5b) for (8) Unit 1 squares total.
- Place (1) 2 1/2" Fabric D square on the left side of (1) 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric G strip, right sides together (Fig. 6). Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper left corner to the lower right corner (Fig. 6). Flip open the triangle formed and press. Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance (Fig. 7).
- Place (1) 2 1/2" Fabric B square on the right side of the 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric G strip, right sides together (Fig. 8). Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner (Fig. 8). Flip open the triangle formed and press. Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance to make (1) Unit 2 strip (Fig. 9).
- Repeat Steps 9-10 to make (32) Unit 2 strips total.
- Repeat Steps 9-10 and refer to Figure 10 for fabric identification, placement, seam direction and orientation to make (32) Unit 3 strips.
- Sew (1) Unit 2 strip to the left end of (1) Unit 3 strip along the Fabric B sides to make (1) Unit 4 strip (Fig. 11). Repeat to make (32) Unit 4 strips total.
- Sew (1) 2 1/2" Fabric B square to each end of (1) Unit 4 strip to make the top row. Repeat to make the bottom row. Sew (1) Unit 4 strip to each side of (1) Unit 1 square to make the middle row. Sew the (3) rows together lengthwise to make (1) 12 1/2" Block 2 square (Fig. 12). Repeat to make (4) Block 2A squares with Fabric E and (4) Block 2B squares with Fabric F for (8) Block 2 squares total.
- Sew together (1) Block 1 square, (1) Block 2B square, (1) Block 2A square and (1) Block 1 square, in that order from left to right, to make Row One (Fig. 13). Refer to the quilt image for placement of specific Block 1 squares.
- Sew together (1) Block 2A square, (2) Block 1 squares and (1) Block 2B square, in that order from left to right, to make Row Two (Fig. 13).
- Sew together (1) Block 2B square, (2) Block 1 squares and (1) Block 2A square, in that order from left to right, to make Row Three (Fig. 13).
- Sew together (1) Block 1 square, (1) Block 2A square, (1) Block 2B square and (1) Block 1 square, in that order from left to right, to make Row Four (Fig. 13).
- Sew together the (4) Rows from Steps 15-18, lengthwise and in numerical order from top to bottom, to make the 48 1/2" x 48 1/2" Center Block (Fig. 13).
Quilt Top Assembly
(Follow the Quilt Layout while assembling the quilt top.)
- Sew (1) 2" x 48 1/2" Fabric B strip to each side of the Centre Block. Sew (1) 2" x 51 1/2" Fabric B strip to the top and to the bottom of the Centre Block.
- Sew (1) 5 1/2" x 51 1/2" Fabric H strip to each side of the Centre Block. Sew (1) 5 1/2" x 61 1/2" Fabric H strip to the top and to the bottom of the Centre Block to make the quilt top.
- Layer together and quilt as desired.
- Sew the (7) 2 1/2" x WOF Fabric D strips together, end to end with 90-degree seams, to make the binding. Fold this long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press.
- Bind as desired.
