Special Stitches

Begpc: beginning popcorn st - 3ch, work 2tr in specified sp, remove hook from loop, insert hook through the 3rd ch of 3ch at beg then through the dropped loop, yoh and pull through, ensuring the popcorn forms a raised st on the front of your work.

Pc: popcorn st - work 3tr in specified sp, remove hook from loop, insert hook through the top of the first tr then through the dropped loop, yoh and pull through.

Tr2tog: treble 2sts together - yoh twice, insert hook in magic ring, yoh and pull through ring, yoh and pull through 2 loops, yoh and insert hook in magic ring, yoh and pull through ring, (yoh, pull through 2 loops) three times.

Note: Tote is worked in motifs, which are sewn together.

Beg Motif (make 53) -

Using 4mm hook and any of the CCs, make a magic ring.

1st Rnd - 2ch, 1tr in ring (counts as tr2tog), 2ch, * tr2tog in ring, 2ch, rep from * 6 more times, slst into 2nd ch of 2ch at beg. Fasten off.

Join a different CC to any 2ch sp, 2nd Row - Begpc, 2ch, pc in same sp, 2ch * (pc, 2ch, pc) in next sp, 2ch, rep from * around, slst into top of begpc. Fasten off.

Join MC to any 2ch sp, 3rd Rnd - 3ch (counts as tr), 2tr in same sp, 2dc in each of next 3sps, * 5tr in next sp, 2dc in each of next 3sps, rep from * twice more, 2tr in same sp as 3tr at beg, slst into 3rd of 3ch at beg.

4th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each st to 3rd of next 5tr, * (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in 3rd of 5tr, 1dc in each st to 3rd of next 5tr, rep from * twice more, (1dc, 2ch) in same tr as dc at beg of rnd, slst into dc at beg of rnd.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Joining Motifs -

Make two sides by sewing rectangles consisting of five motifs wide by four motifs high. Make one strip of 13 motifs sewn together. Sew in ends.

Beg Top Edges -

Both Sides -

Working along a 5-motif side and using MC and 4mm hook, join yarn to corner sp, 1st Row - 1ch, 1dc in same sp, 1dc in each st to next corner sp of same motif, 1dc in sp, * 1dc in corner sp of adjoining motif, 1dc in each st to next corner sp of same motif, 1dc in sp, rep from * to end, turn ... 70sts.

2nd - 12th Rows - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st across.

Fasten off.

Long Strip -

Using MC and 4mm hook, join yarn to corner sp on one end of Strip, 1st Row - 1ch, 1dc in same sp, 1dc in each st across to opp corner sp, 1dc in corner sp, turn

2nd - 12th Rows - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st across.

Fasten off.

Rep on other end of Strip.

Beg Handles (make 2) -

Using MC and 4mm hook, make 11ch.

1st Row - 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end.

2nd - 105th Rows - 1ch (doesn't count as a st), 1dc in same and each st to end.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Finishing

DO NOT PRESS. Sew Strip between both Side pieces by placing WS together and, using a small, firm running st, sew just a little in from the edges to make a raised seam. Place the ends of the Handles on Top Edge and sew in place using backstitch as shown in diagram. Sew in any rem ends.
