Instructions

Reference the downloadable project sheet for project pattern diagrams.

Note: Shrug starts at centre motif, additional rounds added to make a large square, continuing in rows to make a large rectangle. Long sides partially sewn tog, form sleeves. Collar and cuffs are crocheted on to Shrug.

Special Abbreviations

Beg dec = begin decrease (3sts to 1st) - 3ch, (yoh, insert hook in next st, yoh, pull through 2 loops, yoh, pull through 2 loops) twice, yoh and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Dec = decrease (3sts to 1st) - (yoh, insert hook in next st, yoh, pull through 2 loops, yoh, pull through 2 loops) 3 times, yoh and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

fptr = front post teble - inserting hook from the front, around designated stitch and work stitch as required.

bptr = back post treble - inserting hook from the back, around designated stitch and work stitch as required.

Centre Motif (All Sizes)

Using 4 mm hook and C1, make a magic ring.

1st Rnd: 1ch (does not count as a st throughout), 6dc in ring, slst in dc at beg ... 6 sts.

2nd Rnd: 1ch, 1dc in same st, 2ch, * 1dc in next st, 2ch, rep from * around, slst in dc at beg, slst into next ch-sp ... 6 ch-sps, change to C2.

3rd Rnd: 3ch (counts as first tr throughout), 2tr in same sp, * 1ch, 3tr in next ch-sp, rep from * around, 1dc in 3d of 3ch at beg (counts as 1ch-sp) ... 6 ch-sps, change to C3.

4th Rnd: 4ch, 1tr in same sp (counts as beg V-st), miss next st, 2tr in next st, * miss next st, V-st in next ch-sp, miss next st, 2tr in next st, rep from * around, miss next st, slst in 3d of 4ch at beg, slst into ch-sp ... 6 V-sts, change to C1.

5th Rnd: Beg V-st in same sp, 1ch, V-st between next 2tr, * 1ch, V-st in next V-st, 1ch, V-st between next 2tr, 1ch, rep from * around, slst into 3d of 4ch at beg, slst into ch-sp ... 12 V-sts, change to C2.

6th Rnd: Beg V-st in same sp, 2ch, * V-st in next V-st, 2ch, rep from * around, slst in 3d of 4ch at beg, slst into ch-sp ... 12 V-sts, change to C3.

7th Rnd: 3ch, 2tr in same sp, 5tr in next and each V-st around, 2tr in same V-st as (3ch, 2tr) at beg, slst into 3d of 3ch at beg ... 60tr (12 x 5tr groups), change to C1.

8th Rnd: Beg V-st in same st, 1ch, V-st between same and next 5tr group, 1ch, * V-st in 3d of next 5tr group, 1ch, V-st between same and next 5tr group, 1ch, rep from * around, slst in 3d of 4ch at beg, slst into ch sp ... 24 x V-sts. Change to C2,

9th Rnd: Rep 6th Rnd ... 24 x V-sts, change to C3.

10th Rnd: 3ch, 1tr in same sp, 3tr in next and each V-st around, 1tr in same sp as (3ch, 1tr) at beg, slst into 3d of 3ch at beg ... 72tr (24 x 3tr groups), change to C1.

11th Rnd: Beg V-st in same st, 2ch, miss next 2 sts, * V-st in next st, 2ch, miss next 2 sts, rep from * around, slst into 3d of 4ch at beg ... 24 x V-sts, change to C2.

12th Rnd: 3ch, 2tr in same sp, 5tr in next and each V-st around, 2tr in same sp as (3ch, 2tr) at beg, slst into 3d of 3ch at beg ... 24 x 5tr groups, change to C3.

13th Rnd: 8ch (counts as ttr, 3ch), * 1ttr in same st, (1ch, miss next st, 1ttr in next st) twice, (1ch, miss next st, 1dtr in next st) twice, (1ch, miss next st, 1tr in next st) twice, (1ch, miss next st, 1htr in next st) twice, (1ch, miss next st, 1dc in next st) 3 times, (1ch, miss next st, 1htr in next st) twice, (1ch, miss next st, 1tr in next st) twice, (1ch, miss next st, 1dtr in next st) twice, (1ch, miss next st, 1ttr in next st) 3 times, 3ch, rep from * around, omitting last (1ttr, 3ch), slst into 5th of 8ch at beg, slst into next 2ch ... 4 x 3ch-sps (corners), change to C1.

16th Rnd: 3ch, 1tr in same sp, * 1tr in each st and sp to next corner 2ch-sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in corner 2ch-sp, rep from * around, omitting last 2tr, slst into 3d of 3ch at beg ... 53tr each side.

17th Rnd: Turn to work in opp direction, slst into ch-sp, 3ch, 1tr in same sp, * 1tr in each st to corner 2ch-sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in corner 2ch-sp, rep from * around, omitting last 2tr, slst into 3d of 3ch at beg ... 57tr each side (inc by 4tr each Rnd), change to C2.

18th & 19th Rnd: Rep 17th Rnd.

20th - 33rd Rnd: Cont rep 17th Rnd, alternating C1 and C2 every second rnd, carrying yarn not in use up behind work ... 121tr each side.

Size L-XL only -

34th - 37th Rnd: Cont rep 17th Rnd, as set out before ... 157tr each side.

Divide for Sleeves (All Sizes)

1st Row: Using C2, beg dec, 1tr in each st to corner 2ch-sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in corner 2ch-sp, 1tr in each st to last 2sts before next corner, (yoh, insert hook in next st, yoh, pull through 2 loops, yoh, pull through 2 loops) twice, (yoh, insert hook in next 2ch-sp, yoh, pull yarn through, yoh, pull through 2 loops), yoh and pull through all 3 loops on hook, turn.

2nd Row: Beg dec, 1tr in each st to corner 2ch-sp, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in corner 2ch-sp, 1tr in each st to last 3 sts, dec, turn, change to C1.

3rd & 4th Row: Rep 2nd row.

5th-10th Row: Cont rep 2nd Row, alternating C1 and C2 as previously keeping stripe patt consistent, change to C1.

Size L-XL only -

11th-14th Row: Cont rep 2nd Row as set out before, change to C1.

Square Off Sleeve (All Sizes)

1st Row: Beg dec, 1tr in each st to last 2sts before next corner, (yoh, insert hook in next st, yoh, pull through 2 loops, yoh, pull through 2 loops) twice, (yoh, insert hook in next 2ch sp, yoh, pull yarn through, yoh, pull through 2 loops), yoh and pull through all 3 loops on hook, turn.

2nd Row: Beg dec, 1tr in each st to last 3sts, dec, change to C2, turn.

3rd and Foll Rows: Cont rep 2nd Row, alternating C1 and C2 as previously set out, keeping stripe patt consistent until 7sts remain.

Last Row: Beg dec, 1tr, dec.

Fasten off.

Diag. 1 - with RS facing, join C1 as indicated, follow instructions for Squaring Off Sleeve to complete other side of Sleeve.

Diag. 2 - with RS facing, join C2 as indicated and follow instructions for Divide For Sleeves for second Sleeve.

Diag. 3 - with RS facing, join C1 as indicated and follow instructions for Squaring Off Sleeve to complete other side of second Sleeve.

Sew Sleeve Seams

Fold Shrug in half with RS facing and long edge to long edge. Using mattress stitch, sew short edges together at each end as shown in Diagram 4, leaving the final 4 (4.5) stripes nearest the fold unsewn.

Cuffs (All Sizes)

Join C3 to Sleeve seam using 4mm hook.

1st Rnd: 2ch (does not count as a st throughout), work 42 (46) tr evenly around Sleeve opening, slst into tr at beg ... 42 (46) sts.

2nd Rnd: 1ch (does not count as a st), 1fptr around same st, 1bptr around next st, * 1fptr around next st, 1bptr around next st, rep from * around, slst into fptr at beg.

3rd-15th Rnd: Rep 2nd Rnd.

Fasten off.

Border (All Sizes)

Join C3 to Right Arm Sleeve seam using 4mm hook.

1st Rnd: 2ch, work tr around edge of Shrug, 5tr for every stripe edge and 1tr in each corner 2ch-sp (top and bottom) and 1tr in each side seam, slst into tr at beg, do not fasten off.

Collar (All Sizes)

1st Row: 1ch, 1fptr around same st, * 1bptr around next st, 1fptr around next st, rep from * until you reach tr above Left Arm Sleeve seam, turn, ending row with a fptr.

2nd Row: 1ch, miss same st, 1fptr around next st, * 1bptr around next st, 1fptr around next st, rep from to last st of 1st Row, miss last st of 1st Row, turn.

3rd-10th Row: Rep 2nd Row.

Fasten off.
