Cutting
- Using the template provided, cut 2 outer pieces and 2 lining pieces.
- Cut 1 outer piece and 1 lining piece in half as marked on the template to create a left section and right section for either side of the zipper.
- Cut 2 zipper tabs (approx. 1" x 2").
- Cut 1 loop measuring 1 1/2" x 4".
- Place a zipper tab right sides together with one end of the 5" zip and stitch across the width of the zipper using a 1 cm seam allowance. Take care to avoid stitching over the zipper stops.
- Fold the zipper tab away from the zip, press and topstitch close to the seam. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the opposite end of the zip.
- Fold the loop in half lengthwise and press. Open and fold the long raw edges into the centre. Fold in half again and press. Topstitch along both long edges, then fold the loop in half.
- Place the left outer section right side up. Position the zip right side down along the cut edge. Place the matching left lining section right side down on top and stitch using a zipper foot.
- Repeat Step 4 with the right outer section and matching right lining section on the opposite side of the zip.
- Press the fabric away from the zip and topstitch close to both sides of the zip.
- Open the zip halfway.
- Place the back lining and back outer pieces wrong sides together, with the lining at the bottom.
- Place the completed front section on top with the lining side facing up, matching the outer fabrics and the lining fabrics. Insert the folded loop between the outer fabric layers at the top of the pouch, in line with the zip, aligning the raw edges.
- Pin or clip all layers together and stitch around the pouch using a 1 cm seam allowance.
- Trim the corners to reduce bulk. Finish the raw edges using pinking shears or a tight zigzag stitch to reduce fraying, if desired.
- Turn the pouch right side out through the open zip and press to finish.
