CALICO WREATH WITH RIBBON
Level: Beginner
What you'll need:
- 1.3m of 90cm wide Calico fabric
- 2 boxes of 250 Semco Dressmaker pins
- 2.3m of 38mm wide Christmas Tartan ribbon
- 0.9m of 25mm wide cotton webbing/grosgrain tape
- 350mm Decofoam Wreath
- Scissors, roller cutter with cutting mat
- Ruler/tape measure
- Iron
- Glue gun & glue sticks/craft glue
Instructions
Step 1
Cut out from Calico:
- 4x strips measuring 7cm wide of 90cm wide Calico
- 12 x 9cm squares
- 72 x 10cm squares
Step 2
Trim selvedges from calico strips. Using pins to secure and starting on a slight angle on the top side of the foam wreath, tightly wrap wreath with the strips of calico until completely covered.
Step 3
Starting with the 10cm squares, fold each square in half, and press flat.
With the folded edge at the base, bring the base outer corners of the folded edge up to the middle of the raw top edge, making two small triangles. Press flat. Repeat on all 10cm square pieces.
Repeat the same method with the 9cm squares, then keep them aside separately. These pieces will be used in the last row on the wreath.
Step 4
Start by pinning one of the 10cm pressed pieces along the raw edge, to the outer of the wreath, just above the midline, with the raw edge at the top and the tip pointed outwards from wreath. Continue by pinning pieces, tip to tip, around the whole wreath. You should use 12 pieces in total for this first row.
Step 5
Continue on to the second row, by pinning the pieces 1cm higher than the first row, towards the inner of the wreath, centred over the middle of the gap between the pieces from the first row.
If any of the pins are visible from the first row, you can pin down the second row pieces at this point by slightly opening up the folded pieces and pinning only through the back of the piece into wreath where the pins were visible.
Step 6
Repeat method for another 4 rows. This will make 6 rows in total in the 10cm sized pieces.
Note: As the rows go inwards to the centre of the wreath, the pieces will overlap more on the raw tip ends.
Complete the final inner row using the 9cm folded pieces.
Step 7
Either glue or pin the cotton webbing tape along the inner of the wreath to cover up the raw edges of the last row of pressed pieces.
Step 8
Cut an 80cm length of ribbon. Pin or glue the ribbon around the top of the wreath to create a hanging loop.
With remaining ribbon, tie a double bow as per desired. Trim ends of ribbon either into a v shape or on an angle. Glue or pin the bow to front middle of hanging ribbon on the wreath.
