Note: This template is at scale.

Caterpillar Cape

Step 1

From the template provided, cut out:

  • 1x cape from green felt fabric
  • 1x second segment of the cape from light green felt fabric
  • 1x base segment of the cape from dark green felt fabric
  • 16x feet from brown felt fabric

Step 2

To make feet, double layer the felt pieces to make 8 feet. Sew together by top stitching 3-5mm in from the outer edges.

Pin feet to front of cape felt piece as per indicated on template, with the top of the foot 2cm in from the edge of the cape. Baste in place.

Step 3

Place the second segment cut from light green felt over the top of the upper feet, aligning the side curved edges. Pin and then sew together by top stitching 3-5mm in from the outer edges of the light green segment.

Repeat method to attach the base dark green segment to the cape.

Remove basting from the back of cape.

Step 4

Pin the loop side of the hook and loop tape to the top right side of cape as per indicated on the template.

Pin the hook side of the hook and loop tape to the back left side of cape as per indicated on the template.

Sew tape to the cape by sewing around the edges of the tape and a cross through from corner to corner.

Caterpillar Mask

Step 1

From the template provided, cut out 2x mask pieces from red felt fabric.

Cut elastic to a length of 13cm shorter than the child's head circumference.

Pin one end of the elastic to the back side of one of the mask pieces, as per indicated on the side of the template. With the raw edge of the elastic 1.5cm in from outer edge of mask, sew in place 5mm in from mask edge.

Place mask on child's face, and pin other side on elastic to other side of mask, adjusting elastic length to fit comfortably around the back of the child's head. Trim elastic if needed. Remove mask and stitch elastic end to other side of mask.

Step 2

Bend chenille stick into a flat U shape with a 5cm flat base edge.

Place the chenille stick on to the same mask piece as the elastic, on the back in the center 2cm down from the top edge of mask. Glue flat base of chenille stick to felt mask.

If desired, roll the top of the chenille stick into small swirls at the top to create a rounded top finish.

Step 3

Cut a piece each measuring 8cm x 13cm from yellow felt and Vliesofix bonding paper.

Cut a piece each measuring 6cm x 12cm from green felt and Vliesofix bonding paper.

Fuse Vliesofix to back of corresponding felt pieces.

From template provided, trace the outer eye rings from template provided on to the paper side of yellow felt piece and the inner eye rings on to the paper of the green felt piece.

Using sharp scissors, cut out eye rings from felt. Remove paper backing.

Step 4

With the glue side down, place the outer rings onto the front of the remaining mask felt piece. Fuse in place. Repeat with the inner eye rings, placing the green rings on top of the inner rings. Fuse in place.

Step 5

With wrong sides together, layer and pin mask pieces, aligning all edges.

Top stitch layers together 5mm in from the outer edges of the mask.

Top stitch the inner, then outer eye rings through all layers of the mask.
